Northern Virginia Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery

"I am not one to provide negative reviews to local businesses and I've gone back and forth on leaving one for this place, but as my jaw is in considerable pain no less than 10 years after I had my wisdom teeth removed, I feel compelled. Here's why I'm conflicted: the office team at Northern Virginia Oral is great. I was young when I got my wisdom teeth removed from here, but I remember the staff being really friendly and the doctor's being kind as well. That said, a kind bedside manner is only half the battle. The other half of the battle is how well the surgery goes. Wisdom teeth removal is a pretty standard process and, though I wasn't awake to see it, I've learned that most doctor's offices will simply shove a big block in your mouth in order to have access to the teeth in the back of the mouth. The problem with that approach is that if the mouth is propped open at too large of an angle it can actually cause some serious damage to the jaw; which is what happened to me. Almost immediately after my surgery, once the swelling went down, I started to notice that my jaw was tight, popped when I opened and closed it, and locked from time to time – the telltale signs of TMJ. Now, 10 years later, I still struggle with a lot of jaw pain and suspect that it's something that I'll have to get corrected via an invasive jaw surgery or simply deal with for the rest of my life. I don't know if Northern Virginia Oral is unique for this problem, I'm sure it's something that can happen with any sort of wisdom tooth extraction, but 3 members of my family have gone here to have their wisdom tooth removed and 2 have ended up with TMJ. Not flattering statistics in my opinion. If you're looking to go here for wisdom tooth removal, I'd recommend finding somewhere else."

"AVOID AVOID AVOID this practice (Reston and Burke office) We signed and initiated for what we were told is "Cost Estimate" and we did not read/check carefully. Also, we paid upfront 100% "Cost Estimate" per their request before service is performed. They told us they will claim to insurance based on they are in-network and has agreement with insurance. Later, it turned out we signed the "Waiver" which is we obligate to pay for whatever items did not claim and did not get paid by insurance as they want, and whatever the amount they want. They did not claim 2 items and claimed many other items which has 2 items with wrong reason code/code is not in agreement with insurance. We have to pay overcharge for 2 items they did not claim and the other 2 items did not get paid. After many attempts the insurance representatives and us to contact them, they refused to reclaim with insurance with the right code within agreement with insurance. They know if they do, they can't get the overcharge price since per agreement with insurance, the allowable charge will be less than the price they want. We ended up to pay more even they are in-network and has agreement with insurance, and we already paid upfront. Also they claimed and unclaimed many sedations for a 30'-45' minutes surgery. No one can clarify except them. Advice from my insurance representative: - Even doctor office is In-Net-work list, does not mean they are trustworthy business/practitioner. - Never pay up-front if they are in-network with insurance. If they refuse, walk out. - Always read carefully what we are asked to sign. There are many patients have been fallen for this trap."

"My 91-year old mother recently had a large molar tooth extraction. Both Dr. Shihabi and his staff made my mother feel very comfortable prior to, during and after the surgery. Very professional and friendly group. 5 stars!"

"Dr. Aslam and his team were awesome!!!. I had my wisdom teeth removed at age 60+. They were completely focused on me and my recovery. Due to his skill I had no discomfort at all. I never needed more that ibuprofen for pain and was eating soft foods later the same day as surgery. I can't say enough good things about this team and recommend them without reservation."
