These buildings are the surviving slave quarters that housed enslaved people who served as house servants for the Custis and Lee family. Each building has three rooms, with stone foundations and rough stucco walls featuring Greek Revival architectural details. The Summer Kitchen, located in the North Slave Quarters, housed the carriage driver and plantation cook. The South Slave Quarters housed Mrs. Custis's personal maid and housekeeper, along with other enslaved individuals who worked in the household.
