Garrett West Apartments

"It's not the worst place - but it is certainly not worth the amount of rent they are charging people to live there. There is absolutely no sound insulation between the apartments because Greystar decided it would be a good idea to put the laminate wood flooring everywhere in the apartment, except for the bedroom (on every level!). So that means if your neighbor walks around at all or moves anything, has people over, etc - you will hear all of it and it will be loud. It would be normal apartment living noise if the floors were carpeted. Because of what I mentioned above - if your neighbors like to party and the cops come at 4am to pound on the door (like mine did) - you will hear it, regardless of how close in proximity you are to that neighbor in the building. The Office Staff is nice enough, but they do not do anything. Valet Trash left all of my buildings trash on the sidewalks on a 100+ degree day. I literally went to the office to tell them and they did nothing. I had to put in a maintenance request. Same thing happened when a glass bottle was smashed in the parking lot. And maintenance drives by this stuff all day (it's not a big property), so they're not exactly helpful either. There was a period of about six months where one of the Office Staff kept sending out vague threatening emails (i.e. a white car near the office needs to be moved or it will be towed, threatening to close the pool, etc.). One time they went around the property and put stickers on a few cars to be towed, and then never towed them. Cars that aren't broken down or anything - so then there were just cars with orange stickers in the parking lot. Lastly - the intersection in which this property is located is THE WORST. The lights take almost 3 minutes to change intervals and when the power went out in half of Durham, there were no cops to help people get through the pitch black intersection. Not a fault of Garrett West, obviously, but you will experience frustration at that intersection frequently. In short - find some place else! There are enough new builds charging the same amount of rent (and some of them are probably owned or managed by Greystar, too...)"

"Lazy reception staff. You call to complaint about noise of neighbors, for them to say, they will call to let them know. Funny. When I confronted my neighbors, they said they never received a call from the leasing office. The leasing office is joke. Want to live here and get great service? Totally don’t recommend. Living here is nice and all. But the leasing office just got lazy, never keep their word, only there for the money, staff. Edited: Oh, and I’m definitely going to take this up to their company, Grey Star. I had multiple conversations with their staff. They are just rude and lazy af. Telling me, if I dont like noise why not move into a house? Like tf?! Have ever heard owning a house is expensive these days."

"I'm giving one star due to the managers, Amanda and Nadine lack of professionalism in handling a complaint. They completely ignored all evidence involving the situation and sided with a neighbor. All evidence pointed towards the neighbor continuously lying. Management is the foundation, therefore, one star. DJ, and Daniel were awesome. Gigi, awesome. I thank you for listening and allowing me an opportunity to voice and move forward in peace."

"Lived here for over two years - it’s a great deal for the price you pay! Very safe, clean, and quiet. Apartments are very homely, sleek, and modern. Staff were very friendly and on point when I was there. Lots of grad students and medical workers including a few young families with kids. Grounds are well-maintained. No bug issues. I had pest control come every three months and never had issues with bugs. When my lease ended, they allowed me to go month-to-month for a long time until I finalized my plans. I also got my deposit back properly. With 15-501, it’s an easy and smooth ride anywhere you need to go. Target is right there. Duke is 7 mins away, Downtown Durham is 12 mins, and Chapel Hill is 15 mins straight shot. The one downside I had is: All first-floor apartments have HVAC units right by the bedrooms. Some are louder than others, and during the winter the noise can get loud on some of them. I ended up switching from first to third-floor because of this. Might help to get a second or third floor unit unless you have a way to block out noise. Overall, I highly recommend this place!"

"Beware of new management! they are the absolute worst!! I moved out since August 2022. I have been back and forth with the leasing office regarding my deposit. They say 30 days for me to receive the check. it has been a full year and nothing yet. worst management ever Edit: the leasing office keeps on saying the same thing. to contact them so they can check correct forwarding address. I have provided my forwarding address about 5 times already!!! please stop this nonsense!! they are fraudulent and scamming old tenants on their security deposit!"
