Originally created in 1912 by Dr. Edmond Bronk Southwick, a passionate entomologist and Shakespeare enthusiast, the garden was initially designed as “The Garden of the Heart” for public school children to study plants and natural history. It was officially named Shakespeare Garden in 1916 to honor the tricentennial of the Bard's death. Today, the garden is adorned with bronze plaques inscribed with quotes from Shakespeare, offering visitors a literary journey through nature.

On May 5, 2024, our ASEZ volunteers participated in the global ASEZ Green Carbon Movement by planting ficus trees at the University of the West Indies' St. Augustine campus. In collaboration with the Municipality of San Juan, another group of volunteers transformed Plaza de Puerto Rico near the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Additionally, 34 ASEZ student volunteers from universities such as Tufts University and Bridgewater State University united to clean DW Field Park in Brockton.

Designed as a native plant meadow and pollinator habitat, the Naval Cemetery Landscape offers a peaceful escape from urban life. Here, you can witness the beauty of rare birds and insects thriving amidst the native flora. Magnifying glasses are available on site, and we encourage visitors to bring binoculars for a closer look at the bird species from our boardwalk.
