Welcome to Brick Pond Wetland Preserve, a serene oasis nestled in the heart of Owego, New York. Located at 526-576 East Front Street, this 30-acre park offers a tranquil escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Brick Pond is a unique natural habitat, featuring open water surrounded by lush emergent plants and a vibrant wet woods area. Meander along the scenic trail, which includes a charming pontoon bridge, and enjoy breathtaking views of the active beaver colony easily visible from the path.
Renowned as one of New York State's premier birding sites, Brick Pond attracts a diverse array of songbirds and waterfowl, with an especially impressive warbler population during the spring and fall migrations. The wetland's rich history dates back to when the nearby Susquehanna River altered its course, leaving behind this ecological gem. Once the site of a bustling brickyard, the area has been transformed into a sanctuary for wildlife and a peaceful retreat for visitors.
Thanks to the vision of Mr. Peter B. Ellis, who acquired and preserved this land for future generations, Brick Pond is now managed by the Waterman Conservation Education Center. The wetland serves as a natural buffer, absorbing excess water from the Susquehanna River and providing essential habitat for a variety of species. Protected by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Wetlands Act and the Clean Water Act, Brick Pond remains a pristine environment free from industrial development.
Whether you're a birdwatcher, nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a quiet place to unwind, Brick Pond Wetland Preserve offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature. Visit us and discover the beauty and tranquility of this cherished natural haven.

"I truly love this place I grew up walking the trails and watching the wild life but it's in sad shape today the trails are over grown and not mulched the benches and old bridge are gone ! Watermans is not taking care of it ! Very sad and disappointed!"
"This is a great pond for bird watching. Lovely biodiversity and it feels like you're much farther out in the wilderness than you actually are."
"Some of the paths are a bit overgrown, but a decent hike for small children."
"I love Brick Pond. Sometimes the trails are flooded so pick a day when it hasn't had rain in a week or so. Everytime I go I am rewarded with a diverse bunch of birds, usually including a heron and some red wing blackbirds. During my last visit, some young beaver were just as curious about me as I was them. It's a great place to stop, even for just a few minutes, to unwind."
"It's a protected wetland, so, there are limits to the things you can do, but there is quite an array of wildlife. There is a trail with placards to denote the different birds that nest there, the most notable are the Herons. However, due to several floods in recent years, the area hasn't been managed very well, and a majority of the work done there is done by a small group of locals. The trails in some spots are overgrown, but still remain visible. Regardless, it remains an amazing place to get away from the rigors of the daily routine, and take some amazing pictures."
