Situated on South 2nd Street in Lindenhurst, New York, this historical site commemorates the legendary barnstorming game played by baseball icons Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig on the very same spot in 1930. This is the fourth historical marker placed by the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating a momentous event where more than 4,000 fans witnessed Ruth hit an astonishing 500-foot home run and Gehrig secure three hits against Addie Klein’s Lindenhurst Nine. After the game, these legends enjoyed a drink at the nearby Plaza, a hotel, restaurant, and bar on Montauk Highway.

Our name pays homage to a significant chapter in American rail history—the establishment of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and its ambitious plan to connect New York to Boston via Greenport. This visionary route, conceived in the early 19th century, was designed to outpace the traditional path through southern Connecticut by avoiding major water crossings, thus offering a more efficient journey. The LIRR, one of the oldest railroads in the United States, began its journey as the Brooklyn and Jamaica Rail Road in 1832, with the goal of creating a rail line that spanned the entire length of Long Island. By 1834, it was officially chartered, and by 1844, the tracks reached Greenport, establishing a vital link that reduced travel time between New York and Boston from nearly fifteen hours to eleven. This achievement marked a significant milestone in American transportation history.

With facilities in both Riverhead and Greenport, we invite you to explore our collection of historic rail cars, locomotives, and interactive exhibits. Experience a ride on our miniature LIRR park train from the 1964 New York World’s Fair, or step inside a 1960s LIRR caboose. Our historic Lionel Layout, with its 83 accessories, is a must-see for model train enthusiasts.
