South Fort - Vicksburg National Military Park
● OpenSouth Fort at Vicksburg National Military Park is a historic institution located at 4120 Washington Street in Vicksburg, Mississippi, United States. Situated approximately one-half mile north of Interstate 20, South Fort played a crucial role in the Confederate defensive line during the Civil War. The fort's batteries provided a strategic vantage point overlooking the Mississippi River, allowing for a clear view of any approaching U.S. Navy ships. Despite its efforts, South Fort was unable to prevent General Grant from running boats past the river defenses in 1863. Historians and military engineers now believe that the elevation of many river batteries, including South Fort, was not ideal for defense. However, the fort was successful in thwarting Union attacks from the Warrenton Road, a major approach into Vicksburg from the south. During the siege of Vicksburg, South Fort played a key role in keeping Union batteries at bay, with a 10-inch mortar causing significant damage to the enemy's siege lines. Visitors can explore the fort and its surrounding area, with a small parking area available at the base of South Fort along Washington Street. Caution is advised when walking up the steep slopes into the fort to fully experience its historical significance.
