Medfield Rhododendron Reservation

This institution is home to a rare stand of Rhododendron maximum, also known as the great laurel or rosebay rhododendron. It is one of only seven populations of this important species, making it a fragile habitat that must be approached with care. The park features a quarter-mile trail that leads visitors from the Woodridge Road parking area to the stand of rhododendrons. This trail is easy to walk, although it can be wet underfoot. The site is the largest and easternmost population of rosebay rhododendrons in Massachusetts, making it a significant location for conservation.

DNRT Parsons Reserve Trailhead
● OpenThe DNRT Parsons Reserve Trailhead is a beautiful park located on Horseneck Road in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, United States. Currently, the daffodils are just 2% in bloom, but it is anticipated that the field will be worth a visit around mid-April. The access point to the park is on Horseneck Road, just south of Russell’s Mills Village. There is limited parking available at the Russell’s Mills Landing, and during daffodil season, a second parking area is available on the east side of Horseneck Road. The Parsons Reserve is a significant property with Destruction Brook running through it, leading to Slocum’s River. A vernal pool provides habitat for various species, including wild turkeys, salamanders, and rare plants. The Reserve also features a beautiful beech grove, mature rhododendrons, and hundreds of daffodils that bloom every spring. The property is home to deer that can be seen wandering the paths.

Hoft Farm Preserve
● OpenHoft Farm Preserve is a beautiful park located at 74 Lamberts Cove Road in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, United States. This preserve is enjoyed by many for its trails and features a field station used by researchers and burn crews. The 90-acre property includes a mix of mostly hilly pitch pine and oak woodlands, open fields, a small pond, and a small shrub swamp. The topography of the preserve is hillier and more varied than most other preserves on Martha's Vineyard, making it a great place to explore and hike. The property provides a unique perspective on the history of the island's natural landscapes and the impact of humans on these landscapes. The farmhouse on the property has been renovated into the Hoft Farm Field Station, which overlooks Blackwater and Duarte's Ponds. The field station houses TNC staff, equipment, and interns from various conservation organizations on the Vineyard. The preserve is also involved in ecological restoration of sandplain grasslands, a globally rare community type. Visitors can access the preserve by car, bike, or taxi from the nearby ferry landings in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. The trails on the property wind through open fields, pitch pine forests, and dry oak forests, offering the opportunity to see a variety of plant and animal species throughout the year.
