Discover the Wonders of Hawley Bog Preserve
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Hawley, Massachusetts, the Hawley Bog Preserve stands as a pristine example of a natural New England bog. Located at coordinates 42 576105, this remarkable park offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into an unspoiled bog ecosystem, making it one of the best-preserved sites of its kind in the region.
The preserve features a unique floating mat of consolidated peat, which is 30 feet thick and rests on the open water of a deep glacial depression. This extraordinary environment supports a diverse community of plants, including rare carnivorous species like bladderwort and sundews. The surrounding wooded swamp is adorned with wild iris and impressive stands of hemlock and mountain laurel, providing a rich habitat for birdwatchers and occasional moose sightings.
Managed cooperatively by The Nature Conservancy and Five Colleges, Inc., the preserve serves as both a conservation area and an outdoor classroom for local colleges. Spanning 25 acres owned by The Nature Conservancy, with the remaining land held by the Five Colleges consortium, Hawley Bog is a testament to successful collaborative stewardship.
In 1997, a 700-foot boardwalk was constructed, offering visitors an immersive experience over the floating bog mat. This boardwalk, made from non-toxic recycled plastic, was extended and improved in 2012, ensuring minimal impact on the sensitive plant community. While the trail is flat, its wet conditions require careful navigation, making it essential to remain on the boardwalk to protect this fragile ecosystem.
Adjacent to the preserve, the historic Hawley Town Common offers additional walking paths and insights into the area's rich history. Visitors are encouraged to explore these paths to enhance their experience.
Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Hawley Bog Preserve invites you to explore its unique landscape. Please provide ample notice for any special accommodation requests, and remember to respect the delicate balance of this natural wonder by staying on the designated boardwalk.
Plan your visit today and experience the enchanting beauty of Hawley Bog Preserve, a regional treasure in the heart of New England.

"This is very unique place with the boardwalk and such a beautiful wetland nature. I rally enjoyed the time spent there. Is so nice and quiet there."
"Precious place. Serene. Stunning. Short walk to end of bog then just wait for wildlife to reveal. The flowers were magnificent after the rain!"
"Cool place to explore Massachusetts history and it's a decent board walk around the bog preserve, but watch your step as there are many broken boards and some nails sticking out of the board walk, but considering this is a non-profit conservation property they have done a decent job with the property they just need more funds for improvements that's all."
"May not be interesting unless you are interested in nature but this small boardwalk provides a wonderful experience showcasing some wonderful bog species of plants such as sundews, orchids, bladders, pitcher plants, spruces, and so much more. Though be careful while driving up since as you approach the parking lot you lose all signal."
"peaceful surroundings with some high hills and a little amount of wetland. But the area is mostly level and surrounded by enormous trees that provide excellent shade."
