Richard’s Kitchen
● Closed“Football has Messi, basketball has Michael Jordan. Cooking has Richard. This man can do things with an oven that would make Gordon Ramsay question if he’s in the right field of employment. We visited on Sunday for a roast and let me tell you, ol’ Rick knows his way around a piece of beef. Our generation may have been born too late to discover the world and too early to discover outer space, but we’ve been born at exactly the right moment to enjoy a delicious meal at Richard’s Kitchen.”

Haywards
● Closed“We’ve been coming to Haywards for almost ten years now and despite many changes to staff in the kitchen and front of house the standards have never dropped. Under the guidance of owners Amanda and Jahdre they have still manage to produce amazing food with friendly and professional service. Our latest visit was Saturday lunchtime where on arrival we received a lovely welcome from Amanda before she escorted us to our customary table 10. After a little catch up she told us that Jahdre had created for us a special menu that would showcase all the new dishes on the menu. This was a fabulous gesture and one we gladly accepted. We started with homemade Granary Sourdough bread and a selection of snacks including a cauliflower cheese veloute , harissa arancini , goat’s cheese and tomato canneloni. This led us to out first course a Chicken and Ham Hock Terrine with celeriac remoulade , toasted brioche and a homemade piccalilli. This was followed by the Fillet of Pollock with a crab bisque , hispi cabbage. and parsnips. Both dishes were an absolute delight and the flavours complimented each other perfectly. Amanda paired the courses with a Framingham 2021 Riesling from New Zealand. We now moved onto the main course which was a heavenly and rich Braised Pork Cheek with a white bean cassoulet and gremolata topped with a piece of pork crackling. This was paired with a Grand Garant 2020 Fleurie from France. We decided to follow this with a Cheese Course. We then finished with dessert which was a Chocolate Mousse with mascarpone sorbet , coffee cremaux and lime gel a twist on a tiramisu. The pairing for this dessert was a beautiful Australian Muscat from the Rosewood Vineyards that tasted like a light pedro ximinez. Apparently we wasn’t finished there as chef Jahdre sent out an Orange Soufflé with grand marnier caramel and cinnamon ice cream. This was a delight and the flavour combinations worked perfectly together. A coffee and petit fours brought to an end another fabulous dining experience at Haywards with fantastic food , perfect wine pairings and great service. If i ever needed another reason why i think this is the best restaurant in Essex then today’s visit did everything to enhance that. Looking forward to many more visits this year which will at some point include our 150th. Thank You Amanda and Jahdre for a fantastic lunch and look forward to seeing you again soon.”

The Waffle Bar
● Closed“Visited yesterday approx 1pm on a Monday, as a couple, our first time, and it was excellent! Was really quite busy, which was great to see, but can also understand why. Nice ambiance, friendly staff, lovely design of the place and all crockery. Food was really fresh, perfectly priced and timed perfectly. Great menu, we had a tea each, bacon syrup waffles and chicken, pesto toastie. Nice range of ages in there too, friends getting together, family afternoon teas, couples and generally people out for lunch. 100% recommend, and will be back.”

Zig Zag Cafe
● Closed“I'm a regular here and the service is always lovely. Everyone is so kind, friendly and polite. The owner is really attentive towards his customers and makes sure they aren't missing anything from their dining experience. I love the vibe of the cafe and the music always fits my taste. The only issue is that I feel guilty staying longer to finish my work when the busy hours start since there is limited seating and I don't want to hinder their business. It would be nice if in the future there was another floor for additional seats.”

The Grind Café
● Closed8 Red Lodge Road, West Wickham BR4 0EL, United Kingdom“SUMMARY: Lovely friendly cafe / restaurant. Consistently good. We've visited on different days at different times - always hard-working, polite, diligent, and serve great quality food and drinks. Today's pictures are on a Sunday and the place is very busy - but we don't mind. It can be a bit noisy - but it's a cheerful chatty noise. We have been here when it's super-quiet and peaceful, so it's up to you to choose a good time depending on your mood. THE MENUS: Great choices of breakfast, healthy options, Mediterranean, brunch, lunch and snacks. We're never bored with the choices. Today's photos are the grilled chicken salad after the gym. Substantial, fresh and delicious. See photos of the menus. PRICES: very fair and reasonable - generous portions. DECOR & COMFORT: Contemporary look, nice, comfortable and a choice of indoor and outdoor. At the rear there is more outdoor seating in a cute yard but is down some steps. THE SERVICE: Always good. Very attentive and well trained staff. Eye contact and a genuine concern to make your visit good. They will change things, fix things and want to do the right thing for you. TOILETS: Very clean, smell-free, large, adequate with baby-changing fold down table. Step-free level access for buggies and wheelchairs. See photos. BUT... no handrails for the disabled which really would be a bonus. There was a chap in a wheelchair in the café when we visited, and it would be so much better putting a few more facilities for the less able. (Additionally, the Café entrance step could be corrected to allow for step-free access. It's very small, but I know from experience that even these small steps can be stressful for the less-able.) Finally, regarding the toilets: it is a fashion these days to install really high-powered hand driers. The one in this toilet, like many, is DEAFENING. At some stage, the law will change and these will be removed. Illogically loud. (And you can't put your wet fingers in your ears whilst trying to dry your hands! ) THE LOCATION: Busy part of West Wickham near a cross roads and the local council gym-swimming pool. So, parking outside is on the meter - see photos. The street across the road is free is you can find space (except 1-2 pm, Mon-Fri... be careful, you will get a ticket!). Or, pay to use the gym car-park. OVERALL: You can see from the ratings that The Grind is well respected and loved amongst the locals, the elderly, the young, parents with children & babies, groups, alone, the lads from the gym, the girls on a chatty afternoon... well liked by all. Cheerful, lively, successful. Well done to The Grind. We'll be back!”
