Derryounce Lakes and Walkways
Welcome to Derryounce Lakes and Walkways, a hidden gem located in Derryvilla, Co. Offaly, Ireland. This unique institution holds a rich history that dates back to the mid-20th Century when it was purchased by Bord na Móna as part of their greater Clonsast group of bogs. Originally used for sod peat production, this area played a vital role in supplying peat to the old power station in Portarlington. After decades of peat production, the remaining cutaway bog was transformed into a stunning conifer plantation by Coillte. However, in the 1980s, industrial peat production ceased, and the landscape underwent a remarkable transformation. With the lowering of ground levels, a basin was formed in the central area, which eventually became the beautiful Lough Lurgan after the pumps were turned off. This flooded area is now a picturesque lake that adds to the charm of Derryounce Lakes and Walkways.
