"I lived in Santa Barbara for two years. I got to train with Mariano and his students during that time. I've been to Bahia, Brasil with them in 2019. It's obvious that Mariano Silva is an ambassador of Brazilian culture. What isn't evident is the authenticity and integrity in what he brings to Santa Barbara. Anyone can teach you how to do spinning handstands and fancy kicks. Some local instructors even seek to bend an interpretation of the culture to better appropriate to North American sensibilities for the sake of profitability. Mariano does none of that. Instead of a gentrified version of Capoeira, samba and percussion, you get the pure experience of his home culture. You get Bahia in your own backyard! He makes that world accessible to you through his mastery as a teacher, lover of wisdom and the amazing experienced senior students he has cultivated over the years. Take a class - even better, take twenty classes. You'll be changed for the better, contribute to the culture and find more than you imagined you were looking for. "I had a FANTASTIC time taking the capoeira class here. I've visited a few capoeira schools while on my bike tour up the Pacific Coast, Mestre Mariano Silva's academy is by far the most welcoming one. Everyone welcomed me with open arms, and everyone seems really joyful! Mestre Mariano came from Bahia, the birthplace of Capoeira. He has a deep sense of mission and responsibility to enliven people with capoeira and its cultural heritage rather than just scratching the surface of its physical aspect. I am impressed and would return to his academy when I'm back to Santa Barbara again. Oh and let me not forget to say that they also offer a variety of dance classes. I arrived before the Samba class ended and got the opportunity to watch the last 10 minutes of the class. Many students in the dance class are also capoeiristas. What a great way to bring to life a person's sense of swing and rhythm in their body and heart!"
