La Casa de Machado y Stewart
La Casa de Machado y Stewart is a historic adobe home located at 2707 Congress Street in San Diego, California. Built around 1835 by José Manuel Machado, a retired soldier from the presidio, the home originally consisted of two rooms. It was later expanded and improved by Machado's daughter Rosa and her husband Jack Stewart, a sailor and carpenter from Maine. Designated as a California Historic Landmark in 1932, the adobe underwent a major renovation in 1968 to restore its original appearance. The project included shoring the walls, replacing damaged adobe bricks, and installing a new barrel clay-tile roof and period-appropriate windows and doors.
