About the La Casa de Machado y Stewart
La Casa de Machado y Stewart is a historic adobe home located at 2707 Congress Street in San Diego, California. Built around 1835 by José Manuel Machado, a retired soldier from the presidio, the home originally consisted of two rooms. It was later expanded and improved by Machado's daughter Rosa and her husband Jack Stewart, a sailor and carpenter from Maine.
Designated as a California Historic Landmark in 1932, the adobe underwent a major renovation in 1968 to restore its original appearance. The project included shoring the walls, replacing damaged adobe bricks, and installing a new barrel clay-tile roof and period-appropriate windows and doors.
In 2011, further restoration work was done on the east-facing adobe wall, including rehydrating the bricks, applying lime wash, and reblocking and remortaring damaged sections. Proper site drainage and grading were also addressed to ensure the preservation of the adobe structure.
Today, visitors to La Casa de Machado y Stewart can experience a glimpse of early Californian life and architecture. The adobe serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of San Diego.

Reviews of La Casa de Machado y Stewart
"Small reconstructed two room house from the late 1800's. Family lived in and built onto the original home up until the 1960's. Home has a single sign and you can peer into the kitchen and dining area, but unfortunately you can't get a good look at the other room due to the door being locked. Wish there were more signs or an audio recording explaining why certain pieces were put into the recreated house and why they're significant enough to have been saved. Visited: June 2023"
"This former home is tucked away from the main courtyard of the town near the parking lot. Take a trip back in time to see how living as a pioneer was. The house was built to take advantage of outdoor living and even sleeping. Other outdoor areas are preserved, such as the outdoor oven and grill area. One interesting thing you will find is how the dobe house was constructed and how resilient it has been for over 100 years plus."
"Omar is a punk. Who goes somewhere 10 mins before they close and than complains online to hurt the biz. What a punk."
"They said the close at 5 pm, but at 4:50 they already locked the place."
"So interesting sen how the history of this place has been preserved over the years. The furniture, the walls and decorative items all placed to show the visitors how the old days where in the time the people use to live there.
