The Marine Science Institute, located at 500 Discovery Parkway in Redwood City, California, offers engaging and interactive hands-on adventures with marine life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Led by expert marine science educators, the institute provides experiences that inspire respect and stewardship for the marine environment for students of all ages. Public and Family Style events take place most Saturdays, including ship excursions, canoe trips, tide pool excursions, and whale watching. Junior scientists can participate in a 5-day learning adventure exploring Pacific Coast and San Francisco Bay marine habitats, where they can touch live animals, use scientific research equipment, and engage in team-building activities.

Whether you're a beachcomber, fisherman, sunbather, or picnicker, you'll find numerous access points along the coast to enjoy these pristine environments. Our day-use areas are open to the public, and bathrooms are available at most locations. In some areas, please be prepared to pack it in and pack it out to help preserve the natural beauty.

Located in Big Sur, California, the Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve is a park and tourist attraction set in the stunning Santa Lucia Mountains along the Big Sur coast. This reserve spans rugged ridges that overlook the Pacific Ocean and descend to a rocky shoreline, extending about one mile offshore into the Big Creek State Marine Reserve. Visitors to the Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve can explore a diverse range of habitats, from kelp forests and ocean-bottom habitats to coastal scrub, redwood forests, grasslands, oak woodlands, and more. The reserve also protects perennial streams and a pristine watershed that supports a significant population of southern steelhead trout.
