Originally housed in a school, the library has evolved through several relocations, finding its current home on Firestone Boulevard in 1969. Following a significant renovation completed in November 2001, the library was rededicated, featuring colorful murals by Bolivian artist Mario Cespedes that add a festive atmosphere to the building.

Our library's story began under the guidance of the Wednesday Progressive Club before becoming part of the Los Angeles County Free Library in 1914. After a brief jurisdictional change, we returned to the County System in 1951. The current building, dedicated on December 5, 1964, was renamed in 1992 in honor of Mrs. Mayme Dear, a devoted volunteer whose legacy continues to inspire.

Established in 1976 by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, our library was designed to cater to the unique needs of the Marina community. In 1999, thanks to the generous contributions of the Marina Foundation, the Board of Supervisors, and the County of Los Angeles Public Library, we proudly expanded our facility to include the William R. Pagen Nautical Wing and the Greg and Mimi Wenger Community Room. Our library was renamed in honor of Lloyd Taber, a key benefactor whose support was instrumental in our development. Situated in the heart of a vibrant small craft harbor, the Lloyd Taber-Marina del Rey Library offers an extensive Nautical Collection, tailored to the interests and informational needs of boating enthusiasts and the local community. Located at 6600 Del Amo Boulevard, Lakewood, California, our library serves the eastern area of the city, including eight elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Named in honor of Lakewood Mayor George H. Nye, Jr., who passed away while in office in 1971, the library is committed to fostering a love of reading and lifelong learning. The library is supported by the dedicated Friends of Lakewood Libraries, a volunteer-run organization established in 1972. This group actively contributes to the library's success through events, fundraising, and community engagement, enhancing the services we offer to our patrons.
