Maxton Town Office
About the Business
Welcome to the Maxton Town Office, a cornerstone of local government located at 201 McCaskill Avenue, Maxton, North Carolina. Nestled in a community rich with history, Maxton traces its roots back to the 1700s when settlers first arrived along the Shoe Hill Creek and Lumber River. The town has undergone several name changes—from its incorporation as Shoe Hill in 1874, to Tilden and Quhele, before finally becoming Maxton in 1887, in honor of its Scottish settlers.
Education has always been a pillar of Maxton's heritage. In 1841, just outside the town, John Gilchrist Jr. established Floral College, the first women’s college in North Carolina to award degrees. Maxton is also notable for being the site of the first school opened by pioneering black educator Charles N. Hunter. Hunter's legacy continues through his efforts to uplift African American communities by focusing on economic advancement.
Today, the Maxton Town Office is committed to serving our community’s needs and enhancing our town’s infrastructure. We are actively applying for a Stormwater Grant with the Golden Leaf Foundation to develop a comprehensive Stormwater Master Plan. Surveyors from WithersRavenel are working diligently to assess flood-prone areas within the town to improve our stormwater management system.
We invite you to learn more about our vibrant history and our ongoing initiatives to make Maxton a better place for all its residents. Whether you're a long-time resident or a visitor, the Maxton Town Office is here to serve you. For more information, please feel free to contact us or visit our office at the heart of Maxton.
