About the Business
Welcome to the Quincy Unit of the Keweenaw National Historical Park, a captivating destination that invites you to explore the rich history of copper mining on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. Located at 49750 U.S. 41 in Hancock, Michigan, this remarkable site is home to the Quincy Mine, managed by the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, a dedicated non-profit organization.
Step back in time and tour the world's oldest and most intact smelter from this period, nestled along the scenic shores of Portage Lake. The Quincy Mine site boasts an array of historical treasures, including the 1908 Shaft-rockhouse, the 1918 Hoist House, and the expansive underground mining areas. As part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park's 21 Heritage Sites, these landmarks offer a unique glimpse into the past.
Designated as a National Historic Landmark District in 1989, the Quincy Mine was recognized by Congress in 1992 as a quintessential representation of copper mining history. The site played a pivotal role in pioneering deep shaft, hard rock mining, and smelting techniques that influenced global advancements in mining technologies.
At the southern boundary of the Quincy Unit, near the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, lies the historic Quincy Smelting Works. Although currently enclosed by fencing, guided tours are available, providing a rare opportunity to witness one of the best-preserved copper smelting sites of its era. Efforts are underway to stabilize and preserve this iconic site, with hopes of welcoming more visitors in the future.
Established in 1848, the Quincy Mine rose to prominence with the discovery of the Pewabic Lode, earning the nickname "Old Reliable" for its consistent dividends from 1862 to 1920. By its closure in 1945, the Quincy shafts reached depths of 9,260 feet, ranking among the world's deepest at the time.

"It was a great place to visit"
"Really pretty lookout, a nice place to take small or senior dogs. Not a long path, but goes through some ruins. It's a nice place to spend 30 minutes or so. The mining museum and a few fish stores are nearby."
