Wanderer Memorial: A Journey Through History
Welcome to Wanderer Memorial, an evocative and educational experience located at 1 South Riverview Drive, Jekyll Island, Georgia. Our site is home to the Wanderer Memory Trail, a poignant tribute to one of America’s last known slave ships, the Wanderer. This trail is situated along the historic banks of the Jekyll River, where the ship clandestinely arrived 160 years ago, carrying over 400 enslaved Africans.
Embark on a journey through time as you explore the story of Umwalla, a young African boy who was forcibly brought to America aboard the Wanderer. Our interactive exhibits guide visitors of all ages through Umwalla’s harrowing journey from capture to eventual freedom. Each exhibit offers a deeply immersive experience, allowing you to engage with this significant chapter of American history in a meaningful way.

"Disappointed. I drove 3.5hrs to walk this trail and I was very disappointed. For this to be a historical slave site there is not enough to see. The trail is too short and ends with you expecting more. A replica of the ship would be nice, even if it’s sketched on a large wall. Just wasn’t worth the drive for me."
"It was really nice to learn more about history. It was a bit remote on the island and a bit less than I expected. We came with our bicycle (30 min ride) and the garbage was next to the parking for the bicycles. Horrible smell . People who come cycling should be rewarded, not punished."
"We walked the trail and read the wanderer story about the slave boat that came into jekyl. Really informative and great for all ages. At the end is the observation tower where you can see the bridge and a better view of the water. Worth the 10 min walk through."
"A heart felt story of history"
"Really evocative place with pretty views and interesting history. One sign was damaged by the weather but it was in good shape otherwise. I wanted to learn more about the ship and the trial of the men who owned it, and about the survivors and their descendants. There’s some info but not as much detail as I’d like - however it was a good introduction. Not a loop trail fyi."
