"It’s sad that this house is lost to history. John Mehelm (1733-1809) moved here in 1761 and worked as a schoolmaster, ran a general store, and was a member of the New Jersey Assembly. He was a colonel in the 4th Regiment of the Hunterdon County Militia. George Washington stayed at this house in July 1777 while his troops camped nearby."
