About Dr. John Hoffman

Dr. John Hoffman is a highly respected orthopaedic surgeon with over 35 years of experience. He is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Hoffman completed his internship and residency at the University of Wisconsin and further honed his expertise with a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Toronto Orthopaedic Sports Medicine in Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Hoffman is renowned for his expertise in total joint replacements, performing over 500 procedures annually, and has completed more than 1,500 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions throughout his career. His dedication to patient care extends beyond the operating room, having served as the orthopaedic physician for Bettendorf High School for over a decade.

Innovative Treatments and Rapid Recovery

Pioneering the Rapid Recovery Joint Program at UnityPoint Health, Dr. Hoffman has revolutionized patient recovery times, allowing individuals to leave the hospital in less than half the national average time. This program emphasizes patient education, pain control, and rapid recovery through a collaborative team approach and research-based clinical pathways. Dr. Hoffman shares his expertise through a statewide orthopaedic collaborative, teaching other surgeons how to implement this successful program.

As the director of outpatient surgery at Mississippi Valley Surgery Center, Dr. Hoffman is one of only two surgeons in Iowa performing total joint procedures in an ambulatory surgery center. He has developed protocols for unicompartmental (partial) joint replacements on an outpatient basis and total joint replacement surgeries with a 23-hour overnight stay.
