About the Business
Welcome to Whittier Hill Reservation, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Amesbury, Massachusetts. This remarkable park, located at the address Amesbury, MA 01913, invites you to explore its rich history and natural beauty.
Whittier Hill is a tear-shaped drumlin, a unique glacial formation that dates back to the Ice Age. As you embark on the meandering loop trail, you'll journey through a lush mixed hardwood forest, ascending a steep incline to reach the summit. Here, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including the picturesque Woodsom Farm and Lake Gardner.
The trail you follow is steeped in history, having evolved from a Native American path to a carriage road, and now, a cherished hiking trail. This area was once the homeland of the Pentucket, a branch of the Pennacook-Abenaki people, who were the original stewards of the land. Their legacy lives on in the trails and roadways that crisscross the region today.
Amesbury's conservation efforts have ensured that a significant portion of Whittier Hill remains protected, preserving its important woodlands and wildlife corridors. The forest is a diverse mix of oak, beech, maple, and pine, with ferns carpeting the forest floor and high bush blueberries thriving in the wetter areas. Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in the sightings of deer, coyote, owls, hawks, and the vibrant warblers that grace the trails in springtime.
Whittier Hill is also a place of literary significance. The renowned "Quaker Poet" and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier lived at the foot of the hill for 56 years. Despite being color blind, he often climbed to the summit to witness the sunset, an experience immortalized in his poem, "The Preacher."
