Reviews
"This review is for the University of Rochester River Campus location because they are unlisted in Google maps. The sushi was abysmal. The rice had been overcooked and was dry and crunchy. There was hardly anything inside the rolls. Waited quite a long time for my food and was sorely disappointed. I used to love eating at the Village Gate location, so I was excited to see the location on campus. Sadly, those days are long gone. Will not be returning to this location, and based on the other reviews I'm seeing, I won't bother driving out to the port of Rochester to try that location, either."
"The food was mediocre and ordered a drink sex on the beach which tasted heavily of tequila which is not typical for that drink. Thankfully the waitress was very kind and the bar remade the drink which was fine second time around. It’s a shame the food was not great because this used to be a great place to visit while boating down the river."
"We have gone to this location 3-4 times a year for the last 4-5 years, typically on a Wednesday to watch the band at Concerts on the Shore. August 7th, arrived around 535 and promptly ordered food and drinks. I opted for the Wednesday night all you can eat sushi and my wife ordered Calamari, and we each ordered a drink. After 40 minutes of waiting for our food, I told the bar tender/waitress to cancel the sushi order as I would not have time to order more servings to take advantage of the all you can each. About 10 minutes later, the bar tender/waitress came out with our food and said "they just plated the food, but I will put in another order for you now". The second plate arrived probably 30-35 minutes later, and it was 1/4 of the portion of the first plate. We were never offered refills for our drinks/beer the hour and a half we were there. We will be going to Bill Gray's on future trips to the lake."
"I’ve been eating sushi since I was 7 years old (over 25 years of eating sushi) , and my favorite spot was California Rollin in village gates. Today Sunday 8/3 i met my parents at Charlotte after work. I ordered sushi here for myself and my mom, and it was the worst sushi I have ever had in my life. I threw half of it in the garbage. The rice was old, the rolls were falling apart, very sloppy, and I know everything is expensive but the pieces of fish were extremely small. I’m so disappointed in this place, it used to be so good. I can’t believe Tom let’s all of this happen We live in Brighton we should have stopped at iSquare sushi spot off the Hudson exit on our way to the beach"
"Went here because we were in the area and hadn’t been to California Rollin since before they remodeled. The biggest thing I noticed was they severely reduced their menu. We sat outside, which was great except they had the music bumpin like it was a nightclub outside so my wife and I couldn’t hear each other talk. Waitress came over and asked if we wanted something to drink, I asked if there was a drink menu and she said “no, it’s just a ‘bar’.” Which is fine, but I would strongly suggest the team here gets a drink menu, totally a missed opportunity. We asked if they could make a rum punch, and they were good! We each ordered 3 rolls, including a few specialty rolls. Food took about 45 minutes to come to the table, which is typical here - I remember back in the day waiting forever for our sushi. The sushi wasn’t anything special, the rice was dry, the Philly roll had no cream cheese in it, and every roll was packed full of rice with nothing in them - just covered in sauce. Once we were done our server brought the bill but then never came back for 15 min, but did apologize once she came over. There are far better sushi restaurants in Rochester to try, that are equally priced. Overall, a weird experience, could be a good place to get a drink, listen to live music and hangout. But I’d rather go to other restaurants in the area that have better quality food for cheaper price. Disappointed in this place, I feel like they want to be something else, have changed owners a few times, and have lost their touch with sushi and/or were having a bad day. Not worth the $100 we spent for lunch on a Sunday. Based on the owners crazy response below to not only my review, but other reviews on here, it makes sense why this place is falling apart."
