Welcome to Inverness Ridge Trailhead, your gateway to the breathtaking beauty of Point Reyes National Seashore in Inverness, California. Nestled within this stunning natural landscape, our park offers an expansive network of approximately 240 kilometers (150 miles) of hiking trails, ready to be explored by adventurers of all levels. Whether you're seeking a tranquil walk through serene habitats or a challenging hike to test your endurance, our trails can be customized to meet your physical and time limitations.
Before setting out on your journey, we recommend stopping by the Bear Valley Visitor Center. Here, you can obtain trail maps, get the latest updates on trail conditions, advisories, and closures, and receive suggestions for hikes tailored to your interests. Our knowledgeable staff is eager to help you plan a safe and enjoyable visit.
To preserve the park's natural beauty and ensure a positive experience for all visitors, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Group Size: Traveling in designated wilderness areas is limited to groups of 25 or fewer to minimize noise and disturbance to wildlife and other visitors.
- Trail Etiquette: Stay on marked trails to prevent erosion and avoid hazards like poison oak and yellow jackets. Respect all trail closures and barriers for your safety and the protection of endangered species.
- Wildlife Safety: If you encounter yellow jackets, consider using an alternate route, especially if you have allergies or are on horseback. Report any unmarked nests to park staff.
- Cliff Safety: Steer clear of cliff edges and avoid climbing. Loose soil can lead to dangerous falls.
- Preparation: Dress in layers, carry sufficient food and water, and be mindful of changing weather conditions. Ensure your safety by treating natural water sources before drinking.
- Wildlife Etiquette: When encountering horses on the trail, step to the downhill side and greet the rider to reassure the horse of your presence.

Reviews
"Just want to share the mushrooms we found here. It's was raining when I start hiking and it couldn't get more beautiful hiking in the rain when the forest comes alive"
"We were expecting incredible views of the bay, since we were on the Bayview Trail. But 95% of the trail was in the forest with no sweeping views of the bay. We did see a glimpse of the Bay and it was at a point where we could see the Farallon Islands, so that was a special treat! We saw tons of banana slugs and mushrooms when we walked in December, and that was nice too! There is a pretty steep trail on the Inverness Ridge trail also."
"We encountered numerous California quail pairs darting along the ground. These birds are round, endearing, and quite shy. The path was windy, boasting tall flowers that matched human height. Throughout the hike, we observed both male and female elks from afar. Arriving early could give you a chance to traverse the whole coastal trail. June seems to be the ideal month for this region if you want to witness a variety of blossoms. While driving, you might come across a dairy ranch. We played guitar to a group of cattle, and they seemed amused and delighted by our unusual human behavior."
"Unfortunately the trail maintenance crews had not been through the upper trails in the park so most of them were seriously overgrown. I know from experience that by mid July most of the trails will be cleared unless there are shortages of volunteers. Usually they are cleared by now but I know we had a lot of rain this year and there are miles of trails to be cleared in the park. All in all Pt Reyes is a beautiful park with an amazing diversity of geography, flora and fauna and well worth a walk in the park."
"This area of the Point Reyes National Seashore has very nice single lane trails. The Inverness Ridge trail runs parallel to the Town of Inverness. All of Point Reyes is great hiking. Be sure to take water and a hat and poles are very useful. Enjoy."
