Our focus is on managing Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS), commonly known as septic systems. These systems are crucial for the safe and effective disposal of wastewater for 30 percent of Florida’s population. Our OSTDS program ensures that these systems are properly designed, constructed, and maintained through rigorous permitting and inspection processes. This contributes to the safety of Florida’s groundwater, which supplies 90 percent of the state's drinking water.

As of July 1, 2022, property owners or authorized contractors have the option to hire private providers for OSTDS inspections, thanks to a new law implemented by the DEP. Please note that operating permits are required for aerobic treatment units (ATU), performance-based treatment systems (PBTS), commercial septic systems, and septic systems in industrial or manufacturing zones.
