About the Business

Welcome to Calvary Cemetery
Located at 49-02 Laurel Hill Boulevard in the vibrant Woodside/Long Island City area of Queens, New York, Calvary Cemetery is a serene and historic sanctuary offering peace and reflection amidst the bustling city. As the first major cemetery established beyond Manhattan by the Trustees of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Calvary Cemetery holds a rich history dating back to 1845 when the Alsop farm, including its family cemetery, was acquired. Consecrated by Archbishop John Hughes in 1848, Calvary has since expanded to encompass 365 acres, subdivided into 71 distinct sections.
Our cemetery is divided into four major sections: St. Calixtus, St. Agnes, St. Sebastian, and St. Domitilla, echoing the ancient Roman catacombs. Each division offers a unique landscape and historical significance, providing a dignified resting place for over 1,750,000 souls.
The centerpiece of First Calvary is our beautiful chapel, originally a frame building, now a stunning limestone structure blessed by Archbishop John Farley in 1908. Adorned with intricate bas relief carvings and topped with a granite statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the chapel regularly hosts Eucharistic celebrations for those interred within Calvary.
We invite you to visit and experience the tranquility and solemn beauty of Calvary Cemetery. Our visiting hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are closed on Sundays and major holidays. Join us for a special service every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Calixtus Chapel.
For more information or inquiries, please contact us at 718-786-8000. We look forward to welcoming you to our peaceful grounds.

"Run down, very uncared for. Missing signs for sections so if you haven't been here already good luck finding the plot. If you have a question , the house hours are ridiculous."
"Ove visited my family plot numerous times and the maintenance here has been HORRIBLE!!!! they have not fixed the sinking plot and the grass hasn't been cut on months. When you drive in everything is mowed and neat but as soon as you drive further in nothing has been maintained. I've seen numerous plots that have been severely neglected. And as far as communication it has been poor!!!!! I will continue to try and reach out to resolve these issues"
"Update 4/6/24 Went to cemetery on Easter Sunday to find the ground sinking again. Sent email, waiting on response. I am trying to get an answer as to why this is the only grave in the area to be sinking. Update...received a call on December 27th after this review and another email that the area was finally filled in. I am totally disgusted with this cemetery. They have stopped upkeep all together and everything is overgrown and it looks terrible. I have been trying for over a year to get my mother's grave filled in as the ground has sunk over a foot. I was originally told several times that someone would look at it and call me back, never happened. Now when I call no one answers and you can't leave a message. I can only assume the message queue is full with complaints. This is a total disgrace and I am sick over it. Btw, the last picture is a joke. They don't care at all about the condition of the cemetery. Still waiting to hear back on my multiple emails."
"Went driving around to find Tony Bennett's and Paulie walnuts grave aka tony sirico grave. Most of the cemetery is missing section markers since they are old wooden signs. I was only able to find Tony Bennett's because his section was one of the few to have markers. Otherwise it's a nice decently kept place"
"I am a genealogist and an amateur historian. I teach in New York City and have a love of Calvary Cemetery. My ancestors are buried in this wonderful establishment and I live just a few minutes away. It is a gorgeous place, well maintained, and deeply historical. So many souls are buried here with thousands of stories and legacies. The staff are wonderful and always help me when I have a question. I have even popped in to ask for a burial location on the spot. They were generous enough to spend time out of their work day to locate my ancestral cousin."
