About the Business

Welcome to the Brooklyn Public Library - Park Slope Branch, a historic and vibrant community hub located at 431 6th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11215. As a cornerstone of the neighborhood, our library offers more than just books; it's a gateway to a world of resources and cultural experiences.
At our branch, you can borrow up to three tools at a time from the Greenpoint Library, explore genealogical resources to trace your family history, and access museum passes to over 80 cultural institutions, making it easy to dive into the rich tapestry of arts and culture that New York City has to offer.
Our library's story began in the early 20th century with a modest collection of natural history books housed in Prospect Park's Litchfield Mansion. Known as the "Prospect branch" until 1975, we have grown and evolved, moving from a small Ninth Street storefront to our current magnificent Andrew Carnegie-funded building in 1906. Inside, you will find a marvel of early twentieth-century architecture, featuring stained glass archways, freestanding columns, a vaulted stained glass ceiling, and a pair of tiled fireplaces.
Your involvement is what keeps the Park Slope Library a vibrant and vital cultural and civic center for everyone. Whether you're here to borrow a book, attend a community event, or simply enjoy the serene beauty of our historic building, we welcome you to be a part of our story. Come explore, learn, and connect with us at the Brooklyn Public Library - Park Slope Branch.
Reviews
"Daycare center or quiet library. Personnel can also be hears laughing and talking loudly in their office which has a door that is usually opened."
"The PSB of the BPL was about a five-minute drive, an 11-minute Bus ride or a 15-minute walk from my apartment on Windsor Pl. (I lived in between 7th & 8th Aves.) in the South Park Slope neighborhood. I also attended P.S. 107 (The John Kimball School) on 8th Avenue. I also grew up in Brooklyn in South Midwood (near the campus of Brooklyn College) & I remember the nearest branch of the BPL was on Avenue J & E. 16th St., about two blocks from my High School, (Edward R. Murrow), which is on Avenue L. Even though the Grand Army Plaza branch of the BPL IS the largest and most impressive, there are LITERALLY 59 other BPL locations around Brooklyn."
"I'm leaving this review of the Park Slope Library as an event space. If you didn't know, upon closing at night, this historic building can host an event, or in my case, a wedding! As an avid reader since childhood, I will treasure it forever as the magical public library where I was lucky enough to get married and celebrate with my loved ones. Jennifer Herklotz, the library's events coordinator, helped plan my wedding with my planner, Krista Rae, and together, they made the planning process simple for me. All of the library staff were extremely warm and helpful. I had both the wedding ceremony and reception here and while it can only host about 100 people for a seated meal event, I was not bothered because I had always envisioned a small wedding. Once you get in there, and try to imagine the space with no plastic desks, piled with computers, you'll see the space is filled with architectural details - just the fireplaces alone cinched it for me. My wedding was in May, and I am still receiving compliments from my guests on the unique and charming venue. (All photos @ Sequoyah Daniel Photography)"
"What a gem this branch of the Brooklyn Public Library system is. Tucked away in the heart of Park Slope at the intersection of 9th Street and 6th Avenue, this library invites you to come in and find a beautiful space for reading, studying, researching and writing. Immediately upon entering through the grand doorways, (there is also a ramp for wheelchair or stroller access) you find yourself in the quietly extraordinary classical revivalist architecture of the now landmarked building designed by Raymond F. Almirall in 1906. There are two grand, non-serviced fireplaces that give a warm feeling to the reading areas, and a lovely plaque honoring Andrew Carnegie, the great philanthropist of his era building hundreds of libraries around the world. The children’s book section is delightful, and there is a foreign language book section that is ingenious. Also, there are desktop computers for reading and book research. There is so much to say about this library that it is better you visit it in person and see and explore for yourself. Highly recommended. Keep supporting your local library!"
"Prospect branch, now Park Slope, is among 21 Carnegie Libraries in Brooklyn. Recently renovated, its audience is kids & care-givers. Free wifi, clean gender neutral bathrooms, computers, beautiful interior."
