Welcome to the Staten Island Ferry
Experience a quintessential New York journey with the Staten Island Ferry, a historic and essential part of the city's transportation network. Located at Staten Island, New York 10301, this iconic ferry service has been transporting passengers between Manhattan and Staten Island long before the era of bridges.
A Journey Through Time
The Staten Island Ferry is one of the last remaining ferry systems in New York, with a rich history dating back to the 1700s when private individuals operated small sailboats known as per augers. Over the years, the ferry has evolved from steam-powered vessels to the modern ten-vessel fleet maintained by the New York City Department of Transportation. Notably, three ferries were even repurposed by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War.
Your Daily Commute and Scenic Adventure
Serving nearly 22 million passengers annually, the ferry provides a vital, non-vehicular link between St. George on Staten Island and Whitehall Street in Manhattan. With free WiFi available at both terminals and onboard, your journey is both convenient and connected. The ferry operates 24/7, with more frequent service during weekday rush hours to accommodate daily commuters. For a more leisurely ride and to avoid the bustling rush, plan your trip outside the highlighted peak hours.
Accessibility and Safety
Both the St. George and Whitehall terminals are easily accessible via MTA buses, the Staten Island Railway, and the Subway. Elevators and escalators ensure accessibility for all passengers. Safety is a top priority, with NYPD and K9 units conducting random screenings. Please be mindful of posted signs and instructions, especially when navigating stairways and boarding the ferry.
A Journey for Everyone
While pets are not allowed, service animals are welcome. Families traveling with children should familiarize them with ferry staff and establish a meeting point at the terminals in case of separation. The terminals also have designated police rooms for added security and peace of mind.
A Fare-Free Tradition
Since July 4, 1997, the Staten Island Ferry has proudly offered fare-free rides, continuing a tradition that dates back to the early 19th century with the Nautilus, the first steam ferry.
Embrace the Iconic Orange
Once painted a reddish maroon, the ferries now sport a bright municipal orange, ensuring visibility even in dense fog and snow. This vibrant color is a beacon of safety and a symbol of the ferry's enduring legacy.
Plan Your Visit
Whether you're a commuter or a tourist, the Staten Island Ferry offers a unique perspective of New York City. Enjoy breathtaking views of the harbor, the Statue of Liberty, and the Manhattan skyline on your journey. For more information on schedules and getting to the terminals, please visit our website.

"I honestly have nothing but good things to say about the Staten Island Ferry, it's so user friendly! We were visiting from CA, but staying in Staten Island so we took the ferry every day into the city. The ferry runs 24 hours and they run about every 30 minutes although I think during the week during commuter hours they were running every 15-20 minutes. It can get a little crazy when you're boarding and exiting. There is no line so everyone is just kind of pushing through, but it's honestly not that bad. The ferry goes right by the Statue of Liberty, not close, but close enough to get a good view if you don't want to pay for the actual tour. Best view of the Statue of Liberty when you're leaving Staten Island is to get on the left side of the boat. There are outdoor areas on the upper levels where you can sit outside or stand against the railing. Leaving NYC, stand on the right side of the boat. Once we there a few days we would sit down in the lower levels of the ferry, plenty of open seating and never seemed to be crowded. Plus there are windows, that still offer views of the Statue of Liberty if you don't want to fight the crowds on the upper level outdoor viewing areas."
"This ferry takes only passengers to and from Manhattan to Staten island. It leaves hourly 24/7 and is free of charge. The ride is about 20 minutes. You get great views of the Hudson and East river and the statue of Liberty."
"Lovely experience to get to New York without a car. Free and working 24 hours / all week long. You will be able to see the Statue of Liberty on the way and some great views of New York."
"Such a great service. It's free as it's a commuter ferry so I would possibly avoid peak times however Sunset was crazy. The terminal has no queueing so it was a free for all rather than a first come first served. Everyone heads straight for the left hand side to see the Statue of Liberty, the view is closer on the way out of Manhattan than it is coming back into Manhattan however you get some fantastic views of Manhattan from the front of the ferry."
"The Staten Island Ferry offers more than just a tourist destination; it's a vital mode of transportation for many residents commuting between Staten Island and Manhattan. Having stayed in Staten Island for two days, I witnessed firsthand the importance of this ferry service. The short journey was a wonderful experience, allowing me to see people from around the globe, speaking different languages, with kids showing curiosity and a little fear on their faces. The enchanting beauty of the sunrise during early morning rides and the cool breeze with the roaring sound of the ferry at night were unforgettable. The ferry provides panoramic views of Downtown Manhattan and a wide-angle view of the Statue of Liberty—sights no one visiting New York should miss. Overall, it's a great experience that costs only your time, not your money. Sharing videos of this journey seems more fitting, so here are a few to capture the essence of this remarkable service."
