Located at the heart of Buffalo in the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, our society has been dedicated to preserving and documenting the heritage of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties since 1974.

Our region's strategic position on the Great Lakes has made it a pivotal point for migration, serving as both a terminus and a gateway. From its early days as home to Native American communities to its settlement by New Englanders post-Revolutionary War, and the influx of European immigrants following the Erie Canal's opening, Western New York is a melting pot of cultures and histories.

As a member of WNYGS, you can delve into this fascinating history through a variety of resources and events, both in-person and online. Join us in our mission by volunteering your time, skills, and expertise, or by making a financial contribution to support our work. Each month, our dedicated volunteers are available at the Central Library to assist researchers with our extensive library collection and to answer any genealogical queries.
