Well after about 16 years of seeing this doctor - asking for my records to be sent to an endocrinologist- I never got a phone call or anything to follow up asking how I was doing. I feel like putting me on synthroid and not doing other testing resulted in the thyroid storm I experienced that landed me in the ER. Overall - this doctor is not someone I would trust my life with. (I also noticed he gave himself 5 stars - most likely to increase his ratings that seem to be dropping)."

"Last summer, Dr. Funaro refused to provide me with an adequate supply of asthma medications that I have been on for more than 30 years, based solely on his dislike of the Affordable Care Act and fear of malpractice lawsuits. After receiving supplemental medication from friends and family, I made an appointment today for three specific issues: a fungal infection, smoking cessation, and asthma prescription renewal. First thing out of Funaro's mouth at our appointment was the fact that, since he hadn't seen me for a year (?), he couldn't write any new prescriptions for me, again claiming ACA interference and fear of malpractice, coupled with an assertion that "most insurance companies won't accept prescriptions if we haven't seen you in the last three to six months." My insurance and prescription providers have no such policies. I had to interrupt him so that I could tell him exactly why I had made today's appointment. First, the fungus: Funaro took one look at my toes and said I should see a podiatrist. There was no examination worthy of the name, nor did he ask any questions about the manifestation or duration of the infection – just go see a specialist. Second, smoking cessation: as soon as those two words left my mouth, Funaro launched into a dissertation about how stop-smoking medications don't work and/or make people go crazy, based on some study he personally oversaw many moons ago. Instead, he told me to change my behaviors (which I have been trying to do) and to "call 311 to get the stuff that the tobacco companies have to give out in New York for killing so many people." Again, there was zero conversation of my nicotine addiction, triggers, reasons for wanting to quit, and cessation-assistance options. After this, I said, "Well, that just leaves the asthma meds, which you've already said you won't fill." I guess it's important to note that he did write the original prescriptions I was seeking to renew. Funaro began bloviating about how his "30 years of experience" informs his decision to NOT write prescriptions for me. For the first time in my life, I face the prospect of not having a simple rescue inhaler at the ready—a position every doctor I've ever had explicitly told me NEVER to be in. And remember, I have health insurance! Avoid this guy like the plague. He passed his prime many years ago, and his primary clientele seem to be older folks who may like being non-stop lectured to by their physician, because it comes off as authoritative. But it's a ruse if it's not based in principles like actually taking the time to EXAMINE and LISTEN to a patient."
