Welcome to Woodhull Mountain Trail Parking, your gateway to an unforgettable adventure in the breathtaking northwestern Adirondacks. Located in Old Forge, New York, our parking area serves as the perfect starting point for exploring the unique Woodhull Mountain, renowned for its long fire tower journey. Unlike typical mountain peaks, Woodhull offers a lengthy, flat approach along an old railroad bed, making it ideal for mountain biking enthusiasts and those seeking a more varied hiking experience.
The first five miles of the trail are mostly flat, providing a smooth ride for mountain bikers throughout most of the year, or a scenic cross-country skiing path during winter months. As you journey along, you'll pass the turnoff to Remsen Falls before reaching a bridge where the biking path ends and the hiking trail begins. Here, you can securely stow your biking or skiing gear before continuing on foot or snowshoe for the final 2.5-mile ascent to the summit. The gradual climb rewards you with stunning views of the Western Adirondacks, and the fire tower offers an even more spectacular vantage point, although access to the cab is currently restricted.
For those intrigued by the rich history of Adirondack fire towers or seeking a new challenge, be sure to explore our Adirondack Fire Towers page. Discover details of the Adirondack Fire Tower Challenge and get inspired for your next adventure.
Getting here is straightforward: from Old Forge, head south on Route 28 towards Minnehaha, and after crossing Moose River, turn left onto McKeever Rd. Follow the road for a quarter mile, then continue straight on the narrow gravel road when the paved road curves left. At the T-junction, take the road to the right and proceed until you reach the gate marking the start of the dirt road and your hike.
We are proud to support the preservation of these historic structures and the natural beauty of the Adirondacks. Our revised hiking guide, updated in 2021, offers insights into 30 historic fire towers, perfect for hikers and history buffs alike.
Remember, as you enjoy the Adirondacks, practice Leave No Trace principles. Prepare thoroughly, pack out your trash, and respect the environment. Use bear canisters when camping and always camp in designated areas. Your mindful actions help protect these cherished lands for future generations.
Join the millions who visit the Adirondacks each year and let this remarkable region capture your heart. At Woodhull Mountain Trail Parking, we are committed to preserving the lands, waters, and communities that make the Adirondacks a beloved destination.

"6-25-24 From the 1st parking spot to the firetower, it is right around 7.5 miles. 15 miles round trip. If you take the trail to the left, it is fairly flat and can easily be hiked or biked well over half the way. But beware, there are some spots that are very muddy, and altogether, we went around 7 trees that were lying across the pathway. We biked around 4.5 miles in, then dropped our bikes and hiked the remaining miles. The trail is really not that terribly steep, but we crossed a couple of creeks that had no decent way to get around besides jumping on muddy hills and going through unmarked sections in the woods to be able to cross. Perfectly ok with just adults, but it doesn't work so well with the little children. So for our family, it wasn't the steepness that got to everyone, but the length. Take it slow and make a day of it. 3 stars for a padlocked firetower. The path to the right (aka gravel road) can also be hiked or biked, but had plenty of hills. If you park on the last nice parking spot on the gravel part, and hike down a short section towards remsen falls, the trail intersects with the trail from the left side. Doing it that way will short your hiking distance to around a 10 mile round-trip hike. There is an old train station there❣️"
