Reviews
"Always a solid experience, but the value isn’t there anymore. These days you can get sauna and cold plunge in so many other places close by (bath house wburg/flat iron, Turkish baths, othership, etc.). Spa 88 has the worst facilities by far and charges a similar price to these other spots To management: you need to bring your per visit price down to ~$35 to remain competitive. You can do this through memberships, but the current 10 and 20 packs don’t cut it! Why would I buy a 10 pack for $500 when I could join equinox for $220/month to get access to a cold plunge and sauna?"
"All the people working at the spa were extremely nice and helpful. Really cool old school feeling. The hottest sauna and the coldest plunge I’ve ever tried."
"Never disappoints. Definitely order a fresh juice from the menu and try their dumplings"
"Good place for relax and health . Good saunas and swimming pools . Traditional food is very tasty , especially solyanka . They also sell alcohol. Towels, bathrobes, slippers are also available to the guests of the bathhouse. Special thanks to the administrator Maria - professional."
"Let me start off by saying that I love this banya. I have probably been ~10 times in the last year. I recommend it all the time. This review is purely for an incident that happened earlier tonight. When I went back to the locker room at the end of the day, I showered and returned to a black liquid bubbling out of the drain and pooling out onto the floor in front of my locker. I don’t think it was sewage but it smelled wretched. I put a towel down and in my sandals stood there transferring everything out of the locker to the bench. It was so disgusting I felt like even the bottom of my shoes would have to be cleaned before taking them home. When I went upstairs to pay I brought this to the attention of two women behind the desk and showed them pictures. One was very kind and assured me (unconvincingly) that it was not unsanitary. The other immediately snapped and asked if it’s such a problem why didn’t you tell us sooner? I told her it only just happened. She repeated herself. I said that for a $65 entry price (not including $50 more for food and drink) it was completely unacceptable. She barked at me again saying that it must not have been bad or I would have alerted them sooner. In the end she took $5 off my $200 bill (entry + food for my partner too). This was almost more offensive than her initial response. I’m not someone out to get a discount, I just shouldn’t have to trudge through smelly wastewater to gather my things. The experience has completely soured me, which is a shame. Previously, I would say Spa 88 is my favorite thing about living in NYC (seriously). I love the grimey tiles, the Windex spray bottles, the furnace of a sauna. It is a fascinating cross section of New Yorkers with some of the best people watching and eavesdropping the city has to offer. I look forward to eating pickled herring and potatoes coated in raw garlic. You put up with a lot, sure (only two or three out of the women’s showers are ever working), but I always said it’s worth it for the food, the schvitz, and the people. When my sister and I got plantar warts on the bottom of our feet from their sandals I started bringing my own flip flops. But the mysterious spillage and nasty response was a huge bummer. These guys are printing money. Either lower your prices or raise your standards."
