"Absolute disappointment. Custom ordered and paid ahead for a birthday cake. Asked for cannoli cream and chocolate mousse. At the party, cake was cut open to a thin layer of cannoli that tasted like rum, and a layer of whipped cream, not chocolate. This was a cheaply made, overpriced cake and I will never return. I grew up in Astoria and loved this bakery as a young kid. When I called after the party to rectify the situation, I was asked for pics which I so graciously provided, sad I got back a snarky response from the owner. Didn’t even make any sense because she sent a picture of another cake that wasn’t mine! Greed gets you nowhere, and neither does your horrible customer service etiquette. The cake was cut in half, tossed in the garbage and my guests ate Italian cookies from BJ’s. Shame on you. Look at this response from Maria, the owner. What a nasty, unprofessional person. Your family would be so proud of you… talking to paying customers like you’re better than them. Update: Nice try with the response, Maria. My photos show how you talk to your customers and so do your other awful reviews. :)"
"We ordered our wedding cake from La Guli and it was perfect! We asked for a millefoglie with french custard and mixed berries. The pastry was crispy, the custard was delicious and the berries were fresh and flavorful. Maria was so easy to work with, had very fair prices, and treated us to a huge sample platter when we were deciding what flavors to go with. Highly recommended if you're looking for a traditional Italian wedding cake! P.S.: their pastries are great too. We tried a lobster tail while we were there and it was fantastic."
"There is definitely an old-world charm to La Guli Bakery, located on Ditmars Blvd. in Astoria. This old Italian family-owned business, whose granddaughter now runs the establishment, has been in the same building for decades. If you are looking for a traditional Italian pastry experience, this has been my go-to since my childhood. They used to be the best bakery, hands down. From homemade cakes to gelatos, you name it—they were fantastic. I make it a point to visit here every once in a while, and today was the day before they shut down for a week of vacation. Upon entering, my partner and I still had the same feeling and smell of the bakery and had the whole store to ourselves, which made it easier for us to choose the strawberry shortcake, chocolate eclair, fruit tart, and glazed Napoleon. Unfortunately, the freshness wasn’t there, as the cream in the Glazed Napoleon was dry and not even sweet. It’s a shame that a bakery that used to be known for its quality pastries is no longer the same."
"Working with Maria at La Guli was such a distinct pleasure. She is a genuinely kind-hearted and caring business owner and knows her baked goods as they are beyond delicious. Wish we lived in the neighborhood so we could come more often. We hired her to do our wedding cake, a traditional Italian layered cake, and cannoli. Where other places either did not do them at all or would charge a premium that was not within our budget, she provided affordability, quality and delicious taste. Our guests loved the unique cake, devoured the cannolis and went back for second helpings. All that considered we still have some in our freezer months later. Do yourself a favor and have La Guli make your next wedding cake. Phot Credit: Jully and Alex Photography"
"I’ve been going to La Guli’s since I was a little girl and it still has the same feeling and smell when you enter the bakery which I love! I wanted to pass on the tradition and order my daughter’s 1st birthday cake and they went above and beyond. The cake looked classic, beautiful and tasted delicious. It was the talk of the party. If you’re looking for a real classic Italian bakery this is the place to go in Astoria."
