North Country Trail @ Route 18
About the Business
Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Western Pennsylvania, the North Country Trail @ Route 18 offers an unparalleled outdoor experience. Managed by the Wampum Chapter of the North Country Trail Association (NCTA), this segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail spans from Zoar, Ohio to the Lawrence/Butler county line east of McConnells Mill State Park, Pennsylvania.Events and Activities:
Our calendar is brimming with events hosted and attended by NCTA Chapters, Affiliates, and staff, as well as the National Park Service staff. These events include organized hikes, trail building and maintenance sessions, and community outreach events. We also hold social gatherings such as hot dog roasts and potluck dinners, fostering a sense of community and fellowship among trail enthusiasts.Volunteer and Community Engagement:
The Wampum Chapter volunteers are the backbone of our operations, meeting regularly throughout the year. Our chapter planning meetings are held quarterly or as needed, while business meetings take place monthly on the third Monday at 6:30 p.m. (ET), alternating between Lisbon, Ohio, and Wampum, Pennsylvania. Our Commitment:
We are dedicated to creating just, diverse, equitable, and inclusive trail experiences. We prioritize solutions that ensure everyone can enjoy and care for the North Country Trail meaningfully, breaking down barriers to access and involvement.Trail Highlights:
- Historic and Scenic Pathways: Our trail covers 43 miles of off-road hiking and 80 miles of temporary connector road walk. It follows the historic Sandy and Beaver Canal, passing through charming communities like Magnolia, Malvern, Hanoverton, and Lisbon.
- Natural Wonders: The trail crosses into Pennsylvania, visiting Sheepskin Hollow Nature Preserve and Beaver Creek State Park. It showcases the region's agricultural and industrial past, passing abandoned mines, family homesteads, and the remnants of the "brick capital of the USA."
- McConnells Mill State Park: Our easternmost section traverses the stunning Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, a national natural landmark created by glacial lakes thousands of years ago. The park features steep gorge sides, boulder-littered valley floors, and a historic 1800s gristmill open for tours.Trail Resources:
