About the Business
Experience America's Industrial Past in the Heart of Central Pennsylvania
The East Broad Top Railroad is a captivating family destination and a National Historic Landmark that offers a unique glimpse into America's industrial past. Established in 1872, it is the only surviving three-foot gauge common carrier railroad east of the Rocky Mountains, making it a significant historical treasure.
A Monumental Preservation Effort
After years of inactivity, the East Broad Top Railroad has been revitalized by a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation. The EBT Foundation, backed by industry leaders and supported by dedicated volunteers from the Friends of the East Broad Top and the Rockhill Trolley Museum, is committed to restoring the Baldwin-built steam locomotives to operating condition and preserving the historic buildings. The Kovalchick family's preservation efforts since 1956 have been instrumental in maintaining this landmark, and their legacy continues to inspire employees, volunteers, and enthusiasts alike.
Shop and Support
Visitors can browse a wide collection of East Broad Top apparel, hats, toys, and memorabilia. The professional crews, with decades of industry experience, are ready to assist with preservation goals, ensuring that the site remains a vibrant educational resource.
A Unique Historical Experience
The East Broad Top Railroad offers an immersive experience into early railroading and industrial heritage. As the oldest narrow-gauge railroad in the United States and the last of its kind east of the Rocky Mountains, it stands as a testament to revolutionary rail technology from 150 years ago. When freight service was suspended in 1956, the site was left as a time capsule, now recognized by the Smithsonian as one of the most intact 19th-century industrial sites in the country.
Guided Tours and Exhibits
Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the remarkably intact 20th-century shop complex, explore the unique roster of steam locomotives, gas motors, and rolling stock, and learn about the rich history of the railroad.
Support Restoration Efforts
The best way to support the restoration efforts is to become a member of the Friends of the East Broad Top or contribute to their annual fundraising campaign. By doing so, you help preserve one of Pennsylvania’s most important industrial heritage sites for future generations.
Note: Due to ongoing maintenance of Steam Locomotive No. 16, all train excursions from May 3rd through August will be pulled by our vintage diesel engine.

"This place is amazing, a true time capsule with very caring and knowledgeable caretakers. Will definitely be back and looking forward to bringing the whole family, and taking more tours. Greatly looking forward to seeing this place restored to its former glory. It is quite a piece of history that should never be lost. Very enjoyable 10/10 would highly recommend."
"We had a great time our guides Blair and Valerie were amazing and really made the experience special. We did the combo ticket to have all 3 experiences."
"Had an enjoyable day at East Broad Top! Road the train, trolley and took a walking tour of the shop/yard. Our shop tour guide, Blair, was great and clearly knowledgeable. Valerie, who greeted us for the Trolley ride, was extremely accommodating and helpful. Both Valerie and Blair went above and beyond for our group and we enjoyed learning about this important part of history."
"My husband and I enjoyed this scenic ride. We rode in the open air car and we were able to hear the horn blowing at road crossings. This reminded me of growing up in W PA along the railroad tracks about 5 houses away from a road crossing. Perfect little trip!!"
"We were going to take our Ohio family on this trip but it was so hot we decided to try it after they left and rate for something different next year when they come. So… yes, it was hot but we knew that going in. We chose the open air car. A few people fussed about the hard seat but it was not anything we found terrible. Sadly tho, the scenery was less than spectacular. Highway, people’s back yards, junked out vehicles. That was very disappointing. I don’t think it was worth $22.00 per person. The ride was 40 minutes. That being said, this might be a really nice ride in the fall when the leaves change. Also, consider evening tours. More likely to see deer in the fields if riding maybe 5:00-6:00. We will try again in the fall and give it a second chance. We may try the trolley ride before summer is over to see if it’s worth taking the extended family. They only come in the summer so I don’t think I’ll recommend the train ride. Got maybe 2 decent pictures. On a separate note… staff rating is A++++++ Wonderful, engaging, informative and God love them for wearing what they need to wear when it was 90 degrees."
