Recent News and Highlights
The Erie Zoo recently experienced the bittersweet passing of Caax (pronounced Cah-sh), the beloved senior jaguar, on August 6, 2024. Caax's devoted caregivers made the compassionate decision to euthanize him following a sudden decline in health, ensuring he was surrounded by those who loved him.
In happier news, the zoo welcomed two Canada lynx kittens on May 17, 2024, marking a significant milestone in their conservation efforts. Born to first-time parents Hunter and Roxy, the kittens are thriving under the vigilant care of the zoo's expert veterinary and animal care staff. The community can look forward to updates on their development via the zoo's social media channels and website.
Conservation Efforts
The Erie Zoo is also making waves with its Last Chance Lagoon Program, which gained national attention with a feature on PBS NewsHour. Launched in September 2023, the initiative provides a sanctuary for relinquished goldfish and koi, offering a responsible alternative to releasing them into the Great Lakes Watershed. The program has already successfully rehomed 52 goldfish, showcasing the zoo's commitment to protecting local ecosystems.

"It was a bit lackluster for the entire family. At least 1/3 of the exhibits were closed or being moved, with no alternative to see the animals. Upon entering, I immediately asked for a map (yes, I'm THAT person) and was told that they were out of maps for the day but there was one of their website. We arrived 30 minutes after they opened- how were they out "for the day"? Fortunately I had already downloaded the map, but I didn't want to have to keep using my phone to get around. As far as animals go, nothing extraordinary; quite the contrary actually. They had a decent little variety, but a lot of zoo "basics" were missing. There wasn't much in the way of interactive learning for the kids, so they quickly became tired and bored in the heat."
"A very open and price friendly zoo, with lots of animals of various types. Price is decent, the park isnt usually busy, and theres a decent parking lot, and good views of the animals. We sadly went during a rainy day, so some of the animals were sheltering at times, but overall it was very good."
"Beautiful clean zoo! Lots to see! The walkways were beautifully decorated and easy to walk through. They have a play area for kids, a gift shop, and snack bar. Lots of buildings with AC so you can get outta the heat for a little bit. Admission wasn’t too bad. And seemed like a good bit of parking."
"Summer 2024, brand new otter exhibit and rebuilt walkways. For a city the size of Erie, it has some very nice animals with lions, rhinos, and a variety of primates. Tip: buy your train tickets when you arrive because they are sold at the same booth as your admission."
"Had a lovely day at the Erie zoo. Took the drive from Buffalo (where we have a membership to the Buffalo Zoo) for a chance to see some new animals. Parking was free, and while there was no reciprocity for Buffalo zoo members, the cost of admission was a modest $12 for adults and $8 for children. There was a large variety of wild cat exhibits, delighting my cat obsessed 4 year old, and plenty of other new animals for Buffalo regulars. I particularly enjoyed the orangutans and gibbons. There is a walk-through enclosure with wallabies and a kangaroo which was an exciting experience to get close to the animals without a barrier. A zoo volunteer inside the exhibit provided a great conversation with plenty of kangaroo facts. The layout of the grounds is excellent, with up close views and glass barriers. Easy to navigate a full stroller along the paths, all of which are lined with plenty of trees, shrubs, and flowers. There is a large court yard near the monkey house where we ate our picnic lunch. Plenty of tables with umbrellas to sit and relax, enjoying the monkeys and flowers (and chipmunks! Although I believe that they entered the zoo without paying admission) Lastly there was a train ride that takes passengers along the outter perimeter of the zoo, past a crocodile (real!) and through a haunted tunnel (not real???). Riders then pass over a bridge to enter an exhibit with mountain sheep and stowaway geese. A fairly decent ride length of approx 10-15 minutes for a bargain $4. TLDR Great time. Good value. Stop by"
