Nicodemus National Historic Site
About the Business
Nicodemus National Historic Site, located at 304 Washington Avenue in Bogue, Kansas, is a significant tourist attraction that tells the story of formerly enslaved African Americans who sought freedom in the "Promised Land" of Kansas after the Civil War. This historic site showcases the involvement of African Americans in the westward expansion and settlement of the Great Plains, making it the oldest and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River.
The institution, consisting of five historic buildings, was designated as a unit of the National Park System in 1996. Visitors can engage in various educational activities such as requesting a traveling trunk, participating in distance learning programs, and exploring lesson plans. Write Out, a collaboration with the National Writing Project and the National Park Service, invites visitors to express their creativity through poetry.
Children can also become Junior Rangers at Nicodemus National Historic Site, further immersing themselves in the rich history of the area. The preservation of photos, film, and other documents from the beginning of Nicodemus ensures that its legacy will be passed on to future generations.
For more information, visitors can contact the Nicodemus Visitor Center and Township Hall at 785-839-4233 to speak with park staff. Come and experience the unique history and culture of Nicodemus at this important national historic site.

Reviews
"Fascinating story of this town. Worth the scenic detour off I-70."
"History kept alive. Nice small, but informative, museum which includes a map for the town walking tour. Make sure you go to the church and worth the walk to the ball fields. Saw a van in town for the “Kansas Black Farmers Club or Association”) so the black farming spirit is alive and well. Thank you for preserving this town and an important part of Kansas and American history."
"A great little out-of-the-way, historically important NPS site. Staff was very kind inside the visitor center. Got our stamp and brochure. The few remaining buildings are walkable or driveable."
"Really cool little town. Amazing history and I hope it gets kept alive for many more years. This town and its story would make an amazing movie or Netflix type series."
"Wow! This place was really awesome to see. I work for a federal agency and is a member on our Civil Rights Committee and had the opportunity to go on a trip with about 15 others to Nicodemus. Not living in Kansas all my life I've only heard stories about the location and early settlement, but never had the chance to see if first hand. The staff was really nice and had tons of information to share. The interesting part was the tour and taken in the scenery of where it all began. This is a great place filled with historical facts!"
