"EK Fernandez has lost the plot, they’ve forgotten what these carnivals are supposed to be about and made everything about money. I understand that COVID was hard for EK, but the new card system is nothing but a shameless money gouging scam. $20 is 200 credits but each game on the midway is 40 for one try? Each ride is 40 for one round?! You have to spend hundreds of dollars to spend a good day at the fair and when you do the math it equates to each ride being $4+ and each game being the same. It’s absolutely ridiculous, they are pricing locals out of their events at this point, and they aren’t even bringing anything new to the table! These are the same games we played for $0.50 run out of the same trailers that I stood in in 2012 and 2013. I hate that this is what they’ve become, and they should be ashamed of themselves for going down this road. 2024 is going to be the last year we go to the Punahou Carnival."
"It would be an ok experience, basically exactly what you expect to get except they gouge and manipulate the prices for their passes. Simple math says that if a $20 card (200 credits) carries a $3 charge for the actual card, that leaves you with 170 spendable credits. If rides are 40 credits, that means you’re left with a $1 balance on your card that will get you nothing. So you either have to spend MORE money to not leave money on the table… or just donate to them. Combine that with the 40 credit ride being about 30 seconds (maybe a little longer for some rides, but definitely not exceeding the magical 1 minute mark). All of that gets topped off by the pass scanners that will somehow always not add up. And god forbid the scanner accidentally scans more than intended because they won’t give you credits back. 2 stars because my kids genuinely love these kinds of events. 2 stars because I expect to spend more than it’s worth. 2 stars because there’s no reason it has to be that way. In fact, I would definitely be spending more if it was less pointlessly expensive."
"The card and fun pass was a no go. You don’t know what you actually paying for each ride, games and food."
"Though the prices are high I am still giving 5 stars because at the end of the night, nothing can put a price on the smiling faces of my nieces & son. It was priceless & just hearing about their experiences on the rides that they were afraid of and the ones that they loved the most was worth every penny. The memories created there will always be embedded in their minds & hopefully passed on to their children. I do love how there were local eateries there that as a family we enjoyed. The only thing they could make changes to would possibly be the balance of what's left on the funpass cards. Other than that, I'd recommend taking your family."
"The 50th state fair was pretty okay. Basically the same rides and games mostly. The prices of the games I believe should cost less, since it would use up my credits quickly. And I would play the games more if it were lower. Rides should cost less too. I feel that their goal is for you to spend more money by refilling and not consider the fun you have. I thought it was a great idea to invite local vendors, which made food options have more variety."
