"About a 2 mile rt from the airport, though you can drive a little further."
"Google maps is wrong. Put GPS to Upolu Airport. Take dirt road just prior to airport (runs next to airport fencing). Follow road/trail until you no longer think your vehicle can make it. And that depends on rain, vehicle, tires, and mainly, the driver. This isn't a place for your sports car, cute little designer dog, or sandals. This is within walking distance of the Кamehaneha Birth Site Mo'okini Heiau is one of the oldest and most sacred heiau (places of worship) in the Hawaiian Islands. It is considered a living spiritual temple and a sacred site to Native Hawaiians. At one time, there were human and animal sacrifice and were generally dedicated to the war god Ku. That being said, respect the site as it has religious/spiritual value. Nothing is marked, so it's hard to know what you're looking at. Still an awesome place to visit and you'll likely have the place to yourself. The only reason for four stars instead of five is difficultly in getting there and not knowing what you're looking at. Still worth it if you have 3+ days on Big Island, but regardless of where you stay, this will kill half a day or more."
"Impressive ruins in remote part of the island. Read up on the history, etc. beforehand as there is no interpretive signs or info. Last mile of the 4WD road may be impassible, so be prepared to walk."
"What an amazing place with such a history. Well worth the drive out. The rugged coast line was spectacular when we were there. We did need 4 wheel drive, we took our jeep. It was 80 degrees so remember some water! The stone work is just amazing and the grounds are very well maintained. Found really big Grasshoppers along the trail up. They were fun. The road is narrow, plenty of room to get around on coming traffic. Make this a stop along your journey exploring Hawaii"
"Well, it's a bit of a trek to get there. Google maps has the wrong instructions. You can take the old airport road. When you get to the end, you can park at the parking lot of you don't have 4WD and walk the road just mauka from the lot towards Kona. There are little trails to the sides of the road to avoid the puddles which during and after rains can be quiet deep. There is a sign when you get there so you really can't miss it. If you have 4WD you can take the road. The second big puddle NOT Recommended to cross. Park to the side so other vehicles can get through and walk. The Heiau site is amazing walk carefully and slowly with respect. Stay off rocks."
