"I was referred her by my midwife to have our anatomy ultrasound done. I had an amazing experience with the ultrasound technician (Madison - I cant remember her last name). She was very sweet and we joked and laughed the whole time. She then sent in Dr. Khine to go over results, and that's where things took a turn for me. Prior to even introducing herself, the first words that she said were, "WOW, you are SO skinny!!" and she chuckled. The asked if my provider sent me in because I have a child with autism (how any of that is related to my current pregnancy and the health of my baby that I came in for, I have zero idea). She went on to say that everything in the ultrasound looked great, BUT she HIGHLY recommended that I come back because I have a very low maternal weight and low BMI which can likely cause issues with my growing baby. This is my fourth pregnancy, naturally I am of smaller frame, and in my paperwork it clearly states that I have never faced any complications and have actually had really incredible pregnancies and birth experiences. I would understand a heightened concern if it was stated that there were complications in the past, but even still, I solely came here for an ultrasound to check on my baby, not to discuss the state of my bodyweight and size. If there were any concerns with my midwife, that would be discussed with her as she is my provider, not them. I left and sat in my car and cried the drive home. I say this because doctors seriously need to be more sensitive to the people that are in their care. Sure her intentions could have been pure, but the words and delivery were extremely hurtful, especially because I have never seen her before a day in my life. I hope that with this review, all of the staff at this facility grow and learn to be more sensitive to their patients, especially when it comes to weight. Weight does not automatically determine the health of the mother or baby she is carrying, and we need to get rid of the narrative that women need to be a certain size and gain or lose a certain amount of weight during pregnancy. I was not there for me, I was there to make sure that my baby was healthy and growing as they should - that is the only thing that should have been discussed in this appointment. Please, providers, be mindful. You have the power to make or break a mother's day, and that really left me not feeling as excited and happy as I should have. It only takes a couple words to have a lasting impact on someone. Please do better."
