"Med Star transferred my son from South Dakota to Iowa. My son has a trache and needs constant humidity to keep his secretions from getting too thick (imagine having a bad cold and you are unable to breathe because your chest is congested with heavy mucus, he is also unable to speak due to the stroke, but does understand). I asked the medic if there was humidification available in the ambulance. I was told they only had room for oxygen. The trip takes over 5 hours. During that time, (I find this out later from the facility he was transferred to), he was suctioned 12 times! Typically every 3-4 hours is sufficient. The next 2 days, his secretions were very thick and bloody, which indicates trauma due to over suctioning and not enough moisture in his airway. If you have respiratory needs, question the competency of the staff and how much respiratory training the staff receive on a regular basis."
