Reviews of Viking Cruises
"Everyone hyped Viking Cruises so we signed up for Grand European Tour. One excursion was not at all what they promised but once Viking has your money- not going to give anything back. This is a billion plus operation and they can’t refund $139.00???? Excursion awful!! potentially dangerous ( no mention in description). So Beware! Lots of other excellent cruise lines out there!"
"Travel started out good; however when we arrived at the Berlin, Germany airport there was not one single Viking employee to meet us following the long flight. So after asking other Airport employees to assist us in finding the always seemingly elusive Viking staff member, we were unsuccessful. Ending up taking a taxi to the hotel. Once there, we met the so called arrogant travel director, Jamie A., whom after telling him there was no one at the airport to meet us, he made a snide remark, “well I guess you guys are real.” This seems to be typical of the Viking River cruise employees. This was our second river cruise laced with issues. I will not give them a third chance ocean or river. It appears, the staff are not well trained for the type of work they do. My wife and I “thought” we going on an Elbe River cruise back in late June to mid-July. I said “thought” because the cruise turned out to be a stationary cruise due to the water level not being sufficient for a Viking long boat. So basically, we stayed on two (2) separate boats for the entire time for meals and lodging and then were bussed to our excursions daily in a bus. There are many more ocean and river cruise companies out there. There is AMA Waterways; Emerald; Uniworld and Avalon to name a few. They don’t need to spend a truckload of money in their advertising budget. They are always full and remember that word of mouth is better than any advertisement on TV or print media. In summary, we enjoyed the first Viking river cruise in 2017 on the Rhine River. Since then we have had two more and both were sub par. We feel that Viking is moving more resources to their ocean cruises and easing up on the river cruising. It is just so unpredictable. Viking knew the water levels were low enough before our cruise, or lack there of. What they should have done is refund all the money we paid, but instead, only offered a smitten amount for the trouble they put us through. Worth noting is a cruise we had originally scheduled with Viking in France for this October. We decided to cancel the entire cruise. Viking honored the cancellation and sent us a check for the amount which bounced when my wife took to bank to deposit. If this doesn’t have huge red flag warnings I’m not sure what does. If there was a rating less than one star I’d given the lowest. Traveler beware."
"VIKING MISSISSIPPI We have been spoiled by our previous Viking cruises and while the following might sound like nit picking, it’s Viking’s fault for treating us so well in the past. We, a party of six, were on the upper leg of the cruise, St Louis to St Paul. This cruise has the potential of being Vikings best river cruise. The ship is just about perfect. The ports are exactly what you expect them to be, River towns and cities that typify middle America. The excursions were spot on for the most part but there was a little problem in execution, nothing radical but lack of communication on some excursions allowed for lost time and lost opportunities. The scenery was outstanding. The views from your balcony were always a delight and the locks were an exceptional experience. Food was hit or miss. In the Restaurant, dining was a pleasure and most of the food was well plated and satisfying. Service in the Restaurant was excellent. At the River Cafe, there were problems with service and food. Buffet selections were not large, serving stations often not renewed quickly, or left long enough for items to lose their heat. The grill was a great idea but executed poorly. Lines were long and didn’t move very fast, meats not properly cooked to order, confusion as to what steak went to whom, etc. This could have been a great addition to the buffet but instead detracted from the experience. Service at the cafe was spotty too. Some waitstaff was effective and accommodating, others obviously undertrained or poorly motivated. I think our biggest complaint was with cabin housekeeping. We had the misfortune of having an inexperienced undertrained attendant. While very sweet and willing, she just constantly forgot things. You had to repeatedly ask for things she forgot, glasses, water, ice, towels, etc. She always forgot to restock our refrigerator with drinks and snacks. Our balcony was not cleaned until we complained. Housekeeping was, at least for us, the biggest issue. Finally, overall attention to detail was lacking. Empty dishes and glasses were often left on tables in the bar or lounges for hours. Self serve coffee and juice stations often were not restocked with cups and glasses. One coffee station was out of service for the entire trip. This is a new cruise for Viking on a new ship with new employees so I’m probably being too hard but this was an expensive cruise and we were expecting a Viking level of service. This was not quite there. We give it 3.5 clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale."
"BEWARE FINAL PAYMENT DUE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CRUISE!!!! Most commercial cruise lines give you a lot more time to make that large payment for your cruise. I do believe this will be my last Viking cruise just for this reason. They hold onto my final payment for one year before I even step foot on one of their ships. They can reinvest and double the money and that time with my money. This is a horrible way to do business."
