About the Business
Explore the unique and stunning beauty of Kansas at Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park in Oakley, Kansas. The park is also home to the largest population of Great Plains wild buckwheat, a native plant found only in the chalk bluffs prairie of western Kansas.
Once a great sea, Little Jerusalem now offers visitors the chance to explore ancient fossils dating back 85 million years. The park's towering rock formations, some reaching over 100 feet, provide breathtaking views of the surrounding Smoky Hill River. Owned by The Nature Conservancy, the park offers two permanent hiking trails for visitors to experience the beauty of this unique landscape.
Guided tours are available for those looking to explore off-trail areas with knowledgeable park staff. Reservations are required for these tours, which offer a deeper look into the geological and historical significance of Little Jerusalem. Daily vehicle permits are required for entry to the park, and visitors are reminded to respect the natural environment by staying on designated trails and refraining from collecting any items from the park.

"A unique area in Kansas, that’s a beautiful merging of desert & prairie, full of diverse plant & animal life. It is breathtaking. Very glad I was able to see this."
"Great short trail! It was an easy walk for us, but we walk trails often. It was so pretty! We were a little sad we couldn't go down into the canyon, but that would destroy it since it's chalk, so it's understandable. We traveled 4 hours to see it, and it was worth it!"
"Amazing state park tucked away in western Kansas. Stayed at Lake Scott State Park to camp and visited here as a day trip. A couple easy trails in the park. No shade on the trails so bring water and plan accordingly.... Like not doing it in the middle of the day during July."
"The scenery was cool since we were out in this general area but wouldn't come just to see it. The restrooms are available in a building. There are a few picnic tables but with zero shelter. It was very hot and with no shade. I do not recommend coming in the heat of the day during warm months. Make sure to bring plenty of water. The views are absolutely beautiful. There are two trails to pick from. One is a half mile overlook and the other is just over a mile but none of the trails go down in the crevice."
"Great 30 minute detour off I-70, especially if you're making a long cross-country trek & want a scenic place to stretch your legs. There are 2 trails: the Overlook Trail (.25 mile with 1 scenic overlook) & the Life on the Rocks Trail (1.2 miles with 2 scenic overlooks). Highly recommended completing the Life on the Rocks Trail for the best views if you have the time. And both are dog-friendly! Keep in mind that the bathrooms may or may not be open during the wintertime due to freezing conditions. *Photos are from Jan 1, 2023"
