"The Viking House has become my go to place for a last minute casual happy hour with friends or a relaxing lunch at the pool bar during the summer. The hamburgers are wonderful and the Veggie Burger is even better! The large meal salads are fresh and tasty. But my personal favorite is the margherita flat bread! Half to eat now and half for tomorrow. The servers are always helpful, and I love supporting college students who are trying to earn a little extra to make ends meet. I have learned to bring cash with me for the tips and found wait staff very willing to break larger bills down into smaller denominations. My special thanks to Cari, the manager, who has gone our of her way to help me with plans for special events at the Viking. She is extremely flexible and has the ability to think outside of the box."
"My partner and I went to Viking House for beer and appetizers in the early evening after a hike. Service and food were great -- definitely above expectations! One thing we liked was that there were several games on large screen TVs, with the volume down and captions on, so we could easily talk as well as track a few different college football games all at once."
"Love going to the Viking! The food is so good, fresh & plentiful. I think I’ve always left with a doggie bag so I have tomorrow’s lunch taken care of. The appetizers are amazing. They’re really dinner. My fav is the pork sliders: you get 3 fresh buns with lots of pork & coleslaw & good sauce. Good comfort food but at very good cost. The wait staff are friendly & helpful! Zane is the best but the others are catching up to him. I’m not a big fan of watching sports so I wish they had tables where you didn’t have TVs all around you. And my one tip on service is to put utensils out as soon as you put drinks out. Not doing this is a common fault I find in many restaurants."
"Viking House went through some stumbles when it first reopened after COVID shutdowns - inconsistent food quality and clumsy service - but now it's up and running great! It's attached to the University Plaza Hotel, owned by Portland State University in Southwest Portland, so it's open to hotel guests as well as walk-ins. The three friends and I who stopped in for dinner and drinks yesterday enjoyed excellent service from Drew along with very good "elevated pub food." One friend and I had fish and chips, which were accompanied by creamy style coleslaw - a cool, balanced mix of chopped cabbage, carrots, onions, that wasn't over-dressed with mayo. The fish was perfectly tender with a crispy, flavorful, golden outer fry. I usually just pick at chips, which often get soggy before the meal ends, but these were nicely done and held up very well. Maybe it's the chunky, spiral shape? One of my companions had nachos, which came piled on an enormous platter - plenty for two or three people, seriously. My friend had ordered chicken added to the nachos, which provided a hearty dinner and half a platter to take home. A third companion ordered pasta mixed with chicken, in Alfredo sauce. (Not what I would order in a pub-grub setting, but he loved it.) Again, tasty, generous, and enough for a second helping to take home. My vodka martini was potent and good enough to order a second one. We ate in the bar area, which is cozy and has a sports-bar vibe. The sound was OFF on the TVs, so customers could watch the games but non-fans could converse without shouting. There is a larger dining room adjacent, which is clean and spacious, but we prefer the pub area. The manager has worked hard to make Viking House Bar & Grill a local go-to, and it shows. I live a short walk away, and I'm delighted to have them in the neighborhood. (PS: Plenty of parking, and the MAX light rail Orange Line stops out front, along with several bus lines.)"
"Absolutely amazing food. These guys work under the university so they don't have the ability to tip on card. So I walked up to chevron and used their ATM. Service was excellent. They brought everything out and had an amazing attitude. Warm and welcoming. Will definitely be back."
