"This is an update to a review from many years ago. Once a great place has continued to disappoint. They get a star because they are still cleaning my custom rings for free, but I was supposed to get free rhodium plating for life. They have not honored this once. You think every 10 years they might be able to do right by their customer, but I guess not. Perhaps they are busy enough they don't need to worry about customer service."

"Ended up here since my original ring maker moved, but really glad I did. My wedding ring was stuck on my opposite hand and they were able to cut my ring off cleanly so it could be repaired if not scrapped."

"I had a necklace repaired for $35. I went home and it broke immediately when I tried to put it on. I called and explained the situation and they said that the type of chain is very delicate and the repair often times won’t work. Why wasn’t that explained to me prior to going through with the repair? If it often doesn’t work, why would you take my money to do it? Very disappointed in the customer response."

"They did an excellent job repairing a custom brass buckle for my father, when his jeweler said it was unrepairable because of the turquoise inlay on the front. I did have to wait a couple of weeks to get it done, but it was worth it - my dad was very happy to have this repaired. They were able to look at photos sent electronically to confirm repair would be possible. One note - the web form didn't seem to work, nor did the generic emails on the web site. I finally ended up emailing the owner and that seemed to have gotten routing to the right place. So, you might want to call first rather than trying to contact them through the web site/email. I'm glad I persisted, though."

"Update: My wife had a custom ring made by Kim's son. Kim and his son are no longer at Four Decades. The customer service has also changed significantly. Services that were agreed to be free like rhodium plating are now being charged for. I had no issues getting a copy of the cad file for the first ring, but had a horrible time getting a copy for the second one. They are still cleaning and checking the stones for free, but I had to ask them to re-clean a ring because it was so dirty after the first cleaning. Maybe over time things will get better again. The star rating is an average of my Pre and Post Kim ratings. I found the right person to bring my ring to life. Kim at Four Decades patiently worked with me to create a custom engagement ring. I had several designs which he helped me narrow down. He worked with me to tweak the designs making several waxes, giving input on design, and finishing it to perfection. I looked at and talked to jewelers all over Portland and Salem before deciding to work with Kim and am confident I made the best choice. My faience gets compliments on a regular basis. Consider your self lucky of you get something from Kim at Four Decades."
