"It looks like a weird period cup for women"

"I was pleasantly surprised by this art installation--it is very simple but striking, and gives Bailey's Crossroads a sense of place and identity. These types of large sculptures are often seen around more affluent and gentrified areas such as Ballston and Rosslyn, so I was proud that this part of Falls Church was also identified as a prominent and established area of NOVA. I also really appreciate the sign next to the sculpture that explains the artists intent behind each component. Some say this was a "waste of government money", but I would disagree. There are many studies to support the positive benefits of public art pieces in a community, and Fairfax and Arlington are diligent about collecting funding from private developers to be earmarked specifically for public art projects. This means that the county essentially is making private real estate developers support local artists for the good of the surrounding community."
