Reviews
"While passing by this building, we were impressed by its grandeur and striking appearance. We took the opportunity to capture a photograph. Based on our research and the positive reviews we have read, we believe it would be worthwhile to visit this location during our next trip to the area, provided it is still open for visitors."
"Beautiful understated Capitol with plenty of history. The exterior dome is the real focal point. Good free reference materials and exhibits in the Capitol building. The staff member at the visitor booth for our visit was a bit of a downer for the experience. She was curt and dismissive about times for a guided tour. There was a school group scheduled, which is understandable. The way she handled what options we had for a guided tour, was not. All in all a great and worthwhile landmark to visit. A little bit of awareness from staff about how far people travel to see the Capitol and being workable, would make a huge difference."
"We're in town for a concert and wanted to explore some local landmarks. This is an absolutely gorgeous historical building that is definitely worth a visit in my opinion. There was a public entrance where you go in, there's security officers and past that, you can go walk around the inside of the capitol building. See the dome from inside and also the congress area. It's gorgeous in and of itself but the grounds around it are also beautifully manicured. There is a cultural museum right by it and also the governor's mansion within walking distance. Gorgeous area to walk around and lots of photo opportunities. Also the veterans memorial is right there as well."
"We had passed by this capital several times on road trips. We were always impressed by the beautiful gold dome, but had never stopped until now. We’re glad we did. At the information desk, one of the staff members offered us a tour. It was extremely informative and helpful. It was fun to have a private tour. Part of the story is that while West Virginia had the funds to build the capital, they couldn’t add all the extras they wanted. For example, there are no murals in the rotunda, as with many capitals. However, I liked the look, and felt it was very well done."
"I really enjoyed my experience here. I was happy they were open Sundays, when I visited, but there was nobody there, so I practically had the place to myself. I enjoyed the cool diversity in statues and memorials, it reflects the neat history of WV very well in opinion. It’s a strange thing when the WV Capitol has more statues of Confederates than Virginia’s, and I’d say they’re better off for it, they force you think about the men which they depict. The veteran’s memorial was really excellent, I enjoyed seeing that one especially, and the coal miners memorial was unique to the Mountain State. There was also a chestnut tree planted in memory of those who perished in the Upper Big Branch disaster, which surprised me because of the chestnut, but was very nice. The Lincoln statue is very cool, especially when one reads the poem “Lincoln Walks at Midnight.” Very much worth your time, cheers."
