About the Business
"The Tudor House" at Cedar Hills Farm, Francis E. Drury, is a historic institution located at 34001 Cedar Road, Gates Mills, Ohio, United States. Founded by Francis Edson Drury, who was a prominent inventor and businessman, the institution has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century.
Originally known for his invention of the first internal gear lawnmower, Drury established himself in Cleveland where he partnered with various companies to manufacture his inventions. In 1925, Drury and his wife Julia decided to move to a more pastoral setting and purchased the 155-acre Cedar Hill Farm in Gates Mills, Ohio, where they built an impressive mansion known as the Tudor House.
The Tudor House features 41 rooms, 14 fireplaces, and a variety of unique architectural details, including marble fireplaces from different countries and rooms finished with different types of wood. The property also included seventeen buildings, greenhouses, and various facilities for farming and gardening.
After the passing of Francis E. Drury and his wife, Julia, the mansion went through various ownership changes, eventually becoming the home of the Florence Crittenton Home in 1948. The institution served as a maternity home for unwed mothers and their children, providing care and support during pregnancy and after delivery.
In later years, the mansion was leased to AIM Jobs and served as a Community Reintegration Center for parole and probation violators. In 1989, the Cleveland Clinic acquired the property and transformed it into the Foundation House, a conference center and office space for the Clinic.
Today, the Tudor House at Cedar Hills Farm stands as a symbol of history and innovation, hosting events, meetings, and serving as a reminder of the legacy of Francis E. Drury and his contributions to the community.
