About the Wisconsin Historical Society
The Wisconsin Historical Society is a renowned library located at 816 State Street in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. With a focus on preserving and sharing the rich history of Wisconsin, the institution offers a wide range of resources and services for researchers, educators, and history enthusiasts.
Visitors can explore historical collections, research their family history, and learn about Wisconsin's past. The institution is home to the largest North American Heritage collection after the Library of Congress, making it a valuable resource for those interested in delving into the history of the region.

Those interested in supporting the institution's mission can inquire about donating historic items to the Wisconsin Historical Society. Reviews of Wisconsin Historical Society
"I did research at the Society Library/Archives. Excellent holdings of microfilm with several machines for review of and scanning pages to a flash drive. Been researching there for decades. Staff very helpful."
"The place is nice, historical by nature, cool in summer. The students studying there are almost totally silent, and studious. Its the staff/"librarians", long, long, long time state employees, that are noisy. A distraction, talking loudly in conversational tone, joking and chatting at their desk like they own the place. Kind of typical of State, State University and related facilities. They should be replaced."
"Craig, the events coordinator, was wonderful to work with. You can tell he really loves his job - he was very informative from the start, when we toured, and all the way to navigating Dance County COVID restrictions a few weeks before our wedding ceremony. We had our ceremony in front of the Wisconsin State Historical society which was absolutely gorgeous! For photos, Craig took us all around the building to some very picture perfect spots. All in all, it was a great experience thanks to Craig! *Photos taken by Pearl and Opal Photography. Go check them out - Jennifer is amazing to work with!*"
"This is the place to come for an authentic library experience: I thought I could get away with quietly sneaking a few bites of a sandwich out of my bag, since there was no one to be seen in the reading room - but then a bouncer-sized librarian materialized out of thin air just as I was taking my second bite. He held the "do not eat food" sign in front of my face, stared at me, and then walked away. Awesome. Five stars. I'll be coming back!"
"The refurbished reading room is spectacular. It is a great place to study or just sit for a while if you are passing through Madison. Although it is integrated with the University library system, the Wisconsin Historical Society is completely open to the public."
