About the Black Hawk Unit
The Black Hawk Unit, located on Wachter Road in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, is a historic park and tourist attraction that offers visitors a glimpse into the past. The site of the Battle of Wisconsin Heights, this 815-acre unit of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway holds significant historical importance. In July of 1832, Blackhawk and his warriors bravely held back militia volunteers, allowing their families to escape across the Wisconsin River.
While not a traditional battlefield, the Black Hawk Unit features a dry, cactus-covered ridge that overlooks a marsh. Visitors can explore Native American mounds dating back to 800 AD, hike miles of trails, and enjoy birdwatching opportunities. The area, once an open oak savanna, is now covered in thick forest, with occasional scenic vistas.
Don't miss the Watcher cabin, a log cabin built in 1863 that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Birders will also appreciate the variety of species that can be spotted in the area, including Eastern Bluebirds and Red-headed Woodpeckers.
Located just 25 minutes south of Devil's Lake State Park, the Black Hawk Unit is part of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, which stretches westward for 92 miles to the Mississippi River. With public boat landings, canoe camping, and over 40,000 acres of public land, there are plenty of recreational opportunities to enjoy.
For the latest information on hiking trails and current conditions, visitors can check the Current Conditions report on the Black Hawk Unit's website. Come explore the rich history and natural beauty of this unique park in Wisconsin.

Reviews of Black Hawk Unit
"Nice area to Hike, nice views."
"Some nice trails with a bit of elevation change along the Wisconsin River bluffs. Most everything is double track width, varying between grass, soil, and sand. There's a bit of upland prairie but the majority of the trail is through woodland. Some areas seem to have gotten more upkeep than others. The "scenic overlook" is completely obscured by overgrowth and some sections of trail had many branches leaning/hanging into the path as well as some unmowed grass, but this is definitely the exception to otherwise relatively clear double track. Most every intersection had a trail sign with "you are here" holes but they're definitely showing their age from the elements. Horses are allowed on the trails but I only saw very occasional "sign"."
"Nice place for a day ride. Easy trails are mostly grass and dirt so no shoes required. Very narrow, steep, winding road to large parking area. Livestock water available in 3 areas. Very LARGE covered arena."
"An easy hike up the hill that still gets your heart rate up. Nice views of the river valley when there is no foliage :) . A neat, old and big dovetail- log-cabin-construction shelter up on top of the hill."
"Good ambling with nice view at the top. Important area from historical standpoint. Interesting pavilion facilities. Parking not typically plowed, as a head's up. Note pretty extensive trails, check the maps."
